Ranting on ranting

... has anyone seen this banana?

All in favour say "Aye". Aye!

>;o))

Aye?
I personally don't care about any of those things, since I'd be hypocritical if I did. (I shoot with a point and shoot; so?)
But I see where others are coming from. Like abraxas said, we all get a good feeling when we think to ourselves "I've made the right decision." It's all opinions really, though, because what the 'right decision' is is subjective. So there's just some of us that think things should be done a certain way, and then get irked when some people don't go with the flow. ;)

I didn't even know there was an option to turn it on or off.

Haha, yes, I wanted to PM you once long ago about a photo. :p Go to 'options' under User CP, I guess. I wouldn't know, since I've never turned mine off, but it's probably there.

The most often problem I encounter with that one is the guy who owns a nikon dx2 because he is a lawyer. He manages to look down his nose at a photographer with a simple film slr. Even if the film dude is 40 years older and been shooting his do nothing camera most of his life.

The DX2 owner thinks his camera on full automatic can do more than the old dude with the old fashioned camera in brain mode. He is also the guy who pushes the myth that you have to have a big old camera to be a real photographer. If enough people with money and no real photo knowledge say that long enough and loud enough the public believes it. Aka Hitler and tell a lie loud and often enough and it's use the stone soap.

That is detrimental to the craft of photography. It's called the dummy down effect. So no matter what a person holds in their hand it is what is in there head that makes them a good photographer. You cant buy experience in a box with nikon on the outside.

It isn't owning that camera first... I wish I could have started with the best camera made when I did. It's thinking that owning that dx2 makes you a better photographer without even reading the manual.

Does that make sense to you. It demeans those of us who paid our dues to be whatever we have become. Usually it makes me laugh since I'm not in he game any more but it also is sad for the craft.

Ps I came out of retirement to shoot a wedding with a couple of old Minolta film slrs. The brides uncle had a dx2. He leaned over my shoulder and said to me. You have the most expensive back up camera in the world here. Showing me his shots with the dx2. Since neither of us had seen mine I said nothing. The customer seemed a little nervous till i delivered my shots which were just fine even with the OLD piece of junk camera.

So in this case, is the irksome component:

A. That a lot of the public will someday pick flash over substance (when it comes to photography) because of this guy, and people like him?

B. That this guy acted arrogantly, and thought that he was "all that" just because he had an expensive camera, and "looked down" on a person with actual experience and a track record?

C. All of the above.

D. Some other thing.

I don't worry too much about "A", because the drumming down has been hapening to all arts since the beginning of time. There will always be *some* people that will appreciate good photos (your bride friend for example) over fancy equipment.

I don't worry too much about "B" either, because it's hard for me to take people like that seriously (ie it's hard to 'dis' me because I'm of the mindset of "like whoa, whatever, dude!")

Two follow up question:

1. How easy is it for @sshats like the flash over substance guy to "get your goat", or otherwise irk you? Does ignoring them or chuckling at them help?

2. Do you worry at all about getting irked at someone who *looks* like he or she is being an @sshat, but is really a nice guy/gal that just happens to have a lot of money and just wants to take snapshots with his/her fancy toy?

well, in most cases his images will never hang in a gallery .... and will never get many votes anywhere (unless they show naked women :p )

Well we too shall have to agree to disagree.... which is what makes for debate.

You dont much care, but I do much care.

My ranting makes me feel better and bothers you. For that I should be sorry, but I'm not.

You most certainly have the right to not care, but I do reserve the right to care and to say I do.

So we shall mark this one up to different strokes I assume.

Pss... The wedding thing was a personal story not the basis for my dislike of people who think they can buy talent at anything. You probably misunderstood that.

A smile always helps ;) or one can say, "I am not a professional like you" and smile a wicked smile ;)

Mostly you instantly see if someone is arrogant or not ... I was approached several times recently as some of you might know, despite carrying around expensive equipment, but it was just the wrong brand ;) ...
.. and I also met people who approached me telling me that they had the same great camera as I have ... looked closer, realised that mine was a model (of the same brand) twice as expensive than theirs, and they started to apologize for confusing this !!!! Unbelievable ! You could see their wide eyes and they were staring at me as if I was a photography god.
In one case I actually explained that the camera does not make me a better human being or photographer and explained why I got this camera and not his, but that his was equally capable to take great photos if used the right way ... crazy world ;)

Well a bad pornographer with a dx2 is still a bad pornographer, but a beautiful woman can make up for that.

I wonder if anyone would realise if on the business card it would say pornographer instead of photographer :lmao:

true story... in my wife's office they have a form that has to be notorised. The company printed a million or so forms. Instead of saying notary public's seal... It said notary pubic's seal. They actually debated whether to bother correcting it. They doubted anyone would nothice. Since it was a government agency they decided to fix it for the Baptists.
