Here is a shot of a nephew I took during an Easter visit. He wasn't crazy about having his picture taken (obviously) but he eventually warmed up and I got a few decent shots.

Timothy, go to your monitor setting and pick reset or return to factory. There is no way anyone does not know it is underexposed.

Very cute. I like the tight crop. Yep, just needs an exposure bump and your good to go.

Got some artifacting from working with a low quaility image... but you can get the idea at least. Did you increase the saturation and contrast levels in this image also?

This is the image the way I would have done it...

(within the constraints of working with a web image, of course! It lacks too much detail for a full workover edit)

did some smoothing, knocked down the overly bright highlights manually, sharpened, a few other small things..

Thanks, Kathy. I like the tight crop too. I get a bit of criticism for cropping too tight but it feels right to me. And this doesn't even seem tight to me, really. I've been watching some Joel Grimes videos lately and he crops really tight too - I like his style.

Finally picked up the x-right colormunki calibrator. My display was definitely way too bright so this should help me out quite a bit. Thanks for the link (in another thread). But I gotta say, not too crazy about this edit. The eyes seem too processed and marble-like. Also, you did a good job of smoothing but it isn't what I was going for. There is no way you would have known this though - I had intentionally grunged the pic up a bit to match what I thought the photo conveyed.

Nice capture on your nephew. I don't see his expression as a bad mood, maybe he is just thinking. Sometimes I try to capture natural expressions of my grand daughter.
