SB700 Vs SV910 on a D7100

I'd google the difference in specs and decide which best fulfills my needs

SB-910 because it is more powerful... more flexibility that way! It will do everything a SB-700 would do, and MORE!

Since you asked, the SB-910 because it's more powerful, has better overheating control, and can accept a dedicated battery pack. The SB-700 can't.

Yea.. and what if you miss shots because you cheaped out?

What shot would you miss with an SB700 that you would get with the 910?

I am not even going to bother answering that...

It's a pretty good question, since a flashes output is doubled from ISO 100 to 200, what's to say that "cheaping out" causes you to miss the shot?
And if power is a concern, but TTL isn't, there are dozens of high quality manual flashes with the same output as the 910 for under $100.

Not bothering to answer that, doesn't really help the OP make a decision... does it? I wish people didn't take it so personal when challenged.
It would make the threads on this forum a lot more fruitful.

Let me make it clear that I'm saying that the 910 is a waste of money, or that the SB700 is better.
But the SB700 isn't a "cheap" option. If you need the actual 21% power increase @ ISO 100... then by all means go for it.
But the chances that you'd miss a shot with the SB700 over the SB910 is very very limited. Not worth the extra $200 to me.

If you had a D7100, would you choose an SB700 or a SB910? And why?
It would depend on what I need to use the flash unit for.

Cabinet makers don't use framing hammers.

If you just want a flash for doing general photography mostly relying on TTL, I would recommend the SB-700.
If you want a flash for doing more specialized photography the SB-910 may be what you need.

For the more specialized types of photography the SB-910 is likely massive overkill, because the photographer is less likely to use TTL modes. In that case most of the features the SB-700 and the SB-910 are useless. Why pay for 'bells and whistle' you're not likely to use?

Both units are CLS Commander mode capable. CLS is an optical off camera flash control system that has some inherent limitations to - range, line-of-sight, complexity of operation, issues when used in direct sunlight.

Consequently, many opt to use very much less expensive 3rd party flash units and radio triggering systems. Radio triggering has way more range, very rare line-of-sight issues, and is unaffected by direct sunlight.
Some of the very much less expensive 3rd party flash units have a simplified TTL capability - Yongnuo YN-560 Speedlight Flash

Depends on what your needs are. Chances are, if you are asking this, you will be ok with an sb700. I would opt for the sb910 for the PC port, cooling features, power, zoom, and it takes a battery pack which is hella useful if you're firing away.
