"Pumping" up his exposure would blow the sky. The correct answer is fill flash, and/or a reflector.

Why do you have your exposure compensation set at -2.3? Especially if you're shooting in Aperture Priority?

Put your EV back to 0, leave your settings on AP, and either use a fill flash or a reflector to bounce light back on to your subject.

You're camera is exposing for the background, thus leaving your subject dark. If you meter on your subject, the background will end up being too bright. In order to get a perfectly exposed photograph without harsh shadows, you have to ADD light to your subject in one way or another.

In addition to the points on exposure (adequately covered), why was this shot in landscape aspect with all the empty space? Granted that is often a valid technique for portrait work, but in this case it really adds nothing.
