EckoZero there is a script available from GIMP registry site that allows you to select an axis (v or h) and it will orientate the image and autocrop too.

I would include your feet/shoes in the shot, rather than cropped off like this the legs. Better also the first picture with a clear view of the face rather than the glasses and its shadow obscuring your face.
