It's about to storm here. I'd like to capture rain. How is this best done and get sharp focus? Should I put my camera on auto focus?

You could do it a ton of ways. What shot do you have in mind? A few drops splashing? A wider/landscape shot? You could use a wide DOF or a thin one...slow or fast shutter-speeds depending on the look.

Robin did a cool shot with Rain, and i did a cool one with snow. Having a subject back lit by a flash makes for great photos.

Shameless plug.

I'd light to catch some rain splashing on the ground.

you might want to keep under shelter to keep it from getting wet, put a plastic baggy over it if you must, a lens hood other wise will help keep water droplets from ending up on your lens and creating photo issues.

two cents from a novice that has shot in snow and rain (really happy I have a lens hood now)

edit: keep it pointed down when not in use.

tried similar shots. Didn't work out well. just looked like a bunch of dots and the ones closer to the lens looked like blurry dots (like yours or is that drops on the lens?). still haven't quite figured out that kind of shot must be a small window of setting to pull it off..

Submit the shots with blurry dots to paranormal investigators and tell them they are "orbs". ;-)

You can see some of Runnah's closer snowflakes do turn it to larger circles.
