It'll be great when he starts stealing paying clients from you too!!! That will be awesome!!!! Some people would say he's just "networking"...you know...you net the clients, and do work for them, then he steals the drop-out as you pick the net. (commercial fishing lingo here...'pick the net', 'drop-out',etc.). Not too much slime either, since he's wearing full raingear. After all, what's yours is his too, right? I mean, just ask around. You've already been told as much,over and over and over.

If a business publishes info on their clients in a public manner (eg posts/friends on facebook) then its their own look out if another competing company then approaches those clients to offer their services instead. Of course there are ways around this, such as setting up a separate business account on facebook and only allowing access to paid clients (only friend clients and keep all profile information hidden barring to friends or some such other setting - I'm unsure what is specifically available).

Or use your own website for client contact.

Definitely some great points made in here. Make your character stand out from the rest and support the photographers. If you are that good, the referrals and networking will come your way. I've met too many photographers that can take a stellar shot but are *******s to the models and others in their own industry. I always see the social media blow ups about "he stole my models" "he bad mouthed me" blah blah blah. Professionalism at its lowest. Don't be that guy.

I think you missed the point.... It's really not a big deal but I was just wondering what side of the fence people stood on this subject.

I don't use Facebook for my photography but I am on Model Mayhem. I know that everytime I credit a model another photographer who see's my portfolio could possibly see the credited model and make contact. But then again, Model Mayhem is set up for that type of networking and I'm not bothered one bit about that. After all, I look at photographers who are local to me to see if I've missed any models (I live in black hole for quality models).

"Poaching" models off Facebook is kinda cheesy and I can understand why it would ruffle your feathers, particularly because you can see it happening and you're the one doing the leg work. Still, it's a social networking site and if you don't want your friend messaging the models you worked with you can unfriend him and tighten your admin settings. Or, figure out a way to let it roll of your back and let your own work speak for itself. On the flip side, when a model tags me on an image I send her, I usually get 4 or 5 friend requests from her model friends and I do zero advertising/ mentioning I photograph models on my FB page.

In short, yes it sucks. Short of calling the guy out, let it roll and keep on shooting. And get on Model Mayhem.

I was wondering what your thoughts and opinions might be on a situation like this: Suppose you have a friend who is also a photographer and he friend request the girls you been shooting? I mean I go through hoops just to get these girls to shoot with me and while I understand that I;m sure these girls are being shot by other photographers ... I am not requesting them from other photographers that I know. so is that sleazy on his part or is it fair game?

Fair game, and for a couple of reasons.

First, a "friend request" is only that: A request. If the model never rogers up, no friendship ensues. Period.

Second, the second guy obviously needs to know some of the models information in order to find her on Facebook. If you post that info, then you have only yourself to blame. If you don't, and the model does, that means the model has no problem with it and wants to be found, and probably isn't too concerned about whether or not you like the fact that the other guy has found her.

I just don't see any real dillema here...

Wondering how the origonal poster found the girls on facebook. are these girls that have never modeleed before and you getting them to model for you the very first time. or are these girls your happning to find on facebook who are allready modeling. whos pics you probalby saw on facebook that you conctacted. if thats the case he's kinda getting the models in the exact same way as you right? models work with as many photographers as they can stop worrying about where he gets his models from and just concentrating on doing a great job at doing tehre photos and treating them nice and they will work with you again.

Complete modeling and photography websites have made big business and are very successful using what this guy does as an example of sharing work and models.......... one good example is Model Mayhem.

The more models that see your work the more you may get called, the more models that get seen the more they may get called. It's a give and take situation. Embrace it as a tool and learn to use it for yourself too. Worry about more important things like which socks you are wearing with the black loafers.
