Most DSLR's already have translucent mirrors. That's how light gets to the camera's AF module.

The money is in consumer - hobby camera markets: so maybe in the not too distant future we will see touch screen function menu selections, high quality plastic optics, deeper market penetration of wireless camera download with built in transmitter, electronics and software improvements might also bring variable area sensor sensitivity.

I can see touchscreens probably creeping into the market - though what might hold them back is the fact that with a DSLR most people end up pocking the screen with their noses when using the viewfinder

I think the next big thing will be EVIL cameras - that is keeping the viewfinder aspect, but replacing the mirror box with a video camera feed direct from the sensor - aka like liveview. I think this will be a big thing since it would allow a new range of output data for the DSLR shooter such as live time histograms and improved preview exposure features. I think what will hold it back is two factors:

1) Waiting for a high quality super fast good resolution video capture and output - to ensure that the electronic viewfinder is showing just as well (if not better) than the mirror box setup - last thing we want is a slower response or reduced detail when viewing.

2) Battery life - features like this will eat more battery life so increased capacity and unit efficiency is a must

More and more I see older film cameras with spanking new top-notch lenses. I caught a guy not too long ago with a Canon EOS 1n 35mm with a 400 2.8 IS on the big end. Hell I'm saving my pennies for a 28-135 IS for my Elan 7e.

I think the next "big thing" is going to be some sort of media integration into the camera itself, be it YouTube or Flickr or something of the sort. As far as camera electronics themselves, I think you're going to see the flip-up mirror in DSLR's going away with cameras like the Olympus Pen and the Samsung variant. Another feature you're going to see popping up on many cameras (it already is available on a couple) is an HDR setting.

My main camera (1N RS) has a fixed pellicle mirror, and it's 15 years old.

It would be nice in a digital body though - dust would barely be an issue, and high frame rates would be easier. The 1N RS does 10 fps ... if the 1D MkIII & MkIV can do 10 fps while flipping a mirror each time - they could probably do at least 15 without having to move the mirror.

The light loss isn't even noticeable.

Really, the only downside I see with it on a digital body is that it would make the sensor and shutter inaccessible. Unless they made a digital body where you could open the back...

EDIT -> Shutter lag is another big benefit of the pellicle mirror. 6 millisecond shutter lag and zero blackout on the 1N RS. For perspective, the 1D MkIV has a shutter lag of 55 milliseconds, and the viewfinder blacks out for 80 milliseconds. <- EDIT

Full frame consumer market bodies.

That, and 100% viewfinders is what I'd like to see.

Well, digital is never going away... But it would be nice if film came back a little. Especially processing - it's getting harder and harder to find places that still do anything other than C-41 (especially where I live).

I dont want to see film back. Being able to see my photos while shooting has spoiled me. I can see touchscreen coming into play, but I think it would require yet again another switch to switch it on and off for shooting purposes. In my opinion, I think it would just make things too complicated (as if they werent complicated enough already sometimes ). I dont really like the idea of EVIL cameras. I dont really know why, but I hate the idea of electronic viewfinders. Ive picked up some P&S Canon cameras at Sears that have them and I really hate the feel of them. Who knows, maybe theyll grow on me? I would love to see full frame consumer bodies come into play. That would be a welcome integration to me. This thread seems to be getting interesting. I cant wait to hear about more ideas!
