This is the 14th time in the last 50 years, that 3-D was going to be the next big thing. :lmao:

Until they can do it without the need for viewers to wear special glasses, it's a non-starter.

+1 we might have the ability to capture or (in the case of CGI) render 3D but we can't display it yet. Heck in the 2 3D films I've seen one was a total disaster (Clash of the Titans) and proved that you can't take a 2D film and make it into a 3D one. Whilst the other (Toy Story 3) was mostly the same as 2D with a very few select scenes making you got a little bit more "oooh" but no reach change.

And through both the best bits in 3D were the scrolling credits
Plus you pay more for a ticket and have to pay more for glasses to watch the 3D - might be just ok in a cinema (though with all the increased costs it just makes me even more inclined to catch it on DVD) but a nightmare if you're watching a film whilst around the home.

They can display it already, look at the 3DS, as well as a small selection of cameras already out the record and show 3D that you don't need glasses for.

yeah 3d without glasses is in the works. article i read said hopefully in about 5 years tvs wont need glasses for 3d.


next big trend. i think garbs hit on it. camera sales plummeting because todays population doesnt care about quality anymore as long as they can cram a million pictures on there cell phones. seems sitting at car shows all i ever see anymore are cellphones pointed at the car taking pics. and postings on forums (non photogrophy of course). storing tons of music on cell phones and ipods has killed off allot of the quality gear in car audio it seems. or at least its what they are catering to nowadays. god i hope this doesnt come to pass.

Pentax has already premiered that technology. So far, it doesn't seem to have grabbed much attention from users or the photography press/web people.

It's always hard to tell what the next big thing will be in d-slrs. Partly it depends on how many cameras it is perceived to have the ability to sell. For example, Olympus developed Live View. Then Fuji had a live view implementation. NEITHER company had much success, and the taste-makers, like Phil Askey at dPreview described Live View as, "a solution in search of a problem." Those were the words dPreview used to describe Live View as developed by Olympus....BUT after Nikon and Canon developed Live VIew implementations, hoooo-boyyyy, it was GREAT!

The camera companies are looking for the next big thing. Autofocusing well, and silently, during video capture is the current newest technology barrier than needs hurdling. I think a better, not JPEG-only HDR and tone-mapping system like Garbz listed, could be the next big thing, as long as Canon or Nikon does it. Pentax doesn't have the cachet or market share to get a movement started. Other possible next big things include the pellicle type mirror that Sony is trying to get going. The camera makers will do whatever they think will sell more cameras.

I honestly think that the next big thing will be entirely new camera formats--new lens lines, smaller bodies, higher-tech looking "futuristically styled" cameras. But, who knows...maybe it'll just be d-slr's with in-built web connectivity systems and YouTube and Facebook upload systems built in.

I know it won't be, as it's not something you can market easily to the masses, but more focus on increased dynamic range (not HDR) would be VERY welcome.

3D cameras were the rage in the 50's and 60's; they went away because of how awkward it was to view the photos... that is still the case.

While I love shooting my sputnik and realist 3d cameras, most people can't be bothered.

I've seen this technology at trade shows, it works well. The problem is dealing with multiple viewers, as the tech I saw used face-tracking technology to line up the image for a single viewer.

Unless you memorized all the button adjustments for the camera, yeah, you don't need to take your eyes off the veiwfinder. I should have been more in depth. With the voice command, you just call out the settings! lol

I've gotten to the point to where I can look directly at my subject and change the settings on my Rebel without even looking at it, and usually my images come out pretty good.

Not on my D300s. I have to actually look to see if i'm on Single, Continous-low, Continous-high, or timer modes etc. And changing the metering setting you have to lift your face off the veiwfinder or else you might scratch your face with your thumbnail. And all the in camera menus, you have to look at your camera. lol Did you memorize those as well? lol

ISO, Shutter, Aperture, exposure comp, and shooting modes and most of the basic stuff I can do without lifting my eye off. But wouldn't it be nice if every single menu, setting and option can be accessed thru voice command?? lol

Didnt Nikon just make a 3d picture viewer that you don't need glasses to see? I know this wouldnt allow you to take 3d images, but its nice if it works, I suppose.

ISO's now up to 125,400 will get cleaner and move into lower priced DSLR's

Sounds good in theory until on a nice bright sunny day when you have that once in a lifetime shot all lined up and just a nanosecond before your finger presses down on the shutter button, a heckler behind you yells out "Take it to Warp ISO 6,000 Scotty..."
