There were definitely other issues, but I am wondering if the SUPER cheap filters messed with her focus system as well in some cases? Any opinion? The low shutter speed issues are one thing, but she did have some good shutter speeds that should NOT have been blurry and her missed focus problems even frustrated everyone trying to help her because it didn't make sense.

I remember one week long session with her (when I was still trying to help) where we had her taking sharp photos... period (apparently with the filters on at that time)! She was listening finally.. and then she listened to someone else again, and they went OOF crap again. So I don't think the filters were the issue... not to mention that is one of the first things we usually tell people (GET rid of the filters!) . I am sure that was reiterated at least once in this year long fiasco!

Personally I don't use uv filters, I do use polarizers and nd's now and then, typically Tiffen as it's easy for me to get at work. No focus issues to speak of....even with the uv filters. So I don't buy the "cheap filters mess with IQ" debate...to the point that I really don't even engage in discussion about them.

It is true that some of the more expensive ones have a better quality...I seen such things last week in fact in the shop, while I did see a difference in clarity among the expensive filter vs the cheap one, I did not see focus issues. Clarity and focus are often related...but still different.

just my take on it all. ;-)

but back to the OP...yeah...so many other factors play in her images that to boast that its just the filter is silly. In the recent pics....lighting was tremendously better than in her past shots...so I would bet her success recently was finally getting lighting right...which plays a huge role in image quality.

To say "no" would be silly as I have not personally seen all of them in action. We all hear stories of such things...but until we have personally seen them...we can't really say and we just pass along mis information across the net.

The only time I think polarizers can and will mess with the af system is when the person does not account for the lighting, as it can diminish 1 or 2 stops so the person would need to adjust. So the af issue in that situation would be more of an issue with trying to af with something that is too dark not so much the quality of the polarizer in general.

I will also add that I have seen cases where people stack on filters and that can throw off af, but these are extreme, ie uv, pzer, and nD I even seem some retards using step down rings and silly things to boot having 4-5 various things on the end of a lens. Needless to say that can and obviously will screw with the af system. But 1 uv or 1 pzer or even the 2 together, I have not personally seen any causing issues from myself or customers.

Maybe an older, and also cheap, linear polarizer? Messing things up? Who knows....there are just sooooo mannnny wayyyyys to mess up photos, it's a wonder that more shots do not come out poorly, given the plethora of possible screw-ups that any one of us could make in the long,long chain that makes up the entire photographic process, from start to finish. Another possibility is having had the camera's eyepiece diopter adjustment messed up...OR simply poorly-corrected vision due to any one of several different "vision problems".
