technique for this photo?

Jesus Christ. All this over that lousy photo? I guess it's better than the "how do I do the Dave Hill effect?" threads...

How do I do the Dave Hill Effect? My Google is broken...Please advise!

Take an ambient light reading using a shutter speed of say 1/125, if you get a reading of F8 you set your flash to give you the same settings, now if you want a slightly darker background like your link all you have to do is set your camera to F8 (that controls your flash exposure) set your shutter speed to 1/200/1/250 (1 stop different, S/S controls you ambient exposure a faster shutter speed lets less in) if you want your background lighter set your shutter speed to 1/60 1 stop the other way,

Gary--You say it's f/8 at 1/200 to 1/250 with flash...I say it's f/11 at 1/250 with flash...neither of us specified an ISO setting, but I'm sure we both meant ISO 200...

But our suggested exposures are different. I propose we settle this the manly way,and each drink pint after pint of beer from now until 3 AM...the last one still awake at 3:00 AM GMT shall be declared the final arbiter, and shall post the final recommended exposure for the OP at 6:59 AM GMT.

May the best liver win!

No you got me wrong it's just an example to explain how to mix ambient and flash slower shutter more ambient = lighter backgroung, i said 1/200 because i don't think all cameras go to 1/250 sinc speed, i can go to 1/500 with my 1Dmk1

Gary, you're missing the point I think: this is an excuse to drink pint after pint of beer, all over a difference of roughly, more or less, a stop to as little as a half-stop of estimated exposure between two people, you and me, over a continent away from one another! (I listed 1/250 and ISO 200 just to tweak off the Canon shooters--my answer is tailored to that 'other brand' with the slightly higher synch speed and the ISO 200 floor!)

Did you already start the beer drinkin' contest???

People need to quit calling DOF, bokeh, because it isn't.

They are completely different technical points and are controlled by different aspects of a lens.

DOF is adjustable. Bokeh isn't, unless you count buying a different make or model of lens.

Uh, actually, when I was referring to bokeh, I was talking about the size and intensity. What you would see wide open on f/1.4 rather than on f/8.

I wasn't calling depth of field bokeh, or one in the same. And I don't really know where you got that from. But if your post wasn't directed at the only other post mentioning bokeh (which is mine), then I don't know wtf you were even talking about.
