The Coffee House

I remember you doing all this! It worked out great. Totally agree about painting a room when you know the carpet is coming out next - I've been in the same situation and it's very freeing!

I love interior painting. Paint isn't as cheap as it used to be, but it's still the least expensive way to change the look of a room.

It's especially freeing when you really hate the carpet like I did, so I was all "Wheeee, look at me, spilling paint all over the carpet!" 🤣

I like painting, too. I mean, I was sick of it by the time I had painted an entire house, but I love watching a room be transformed with even such a simple change. And I have come to enjoy a nice accent wall. It's a great way to include a nice vibrant color even in a small room without overwhelming the space. I've got the deep blue in my living/dining room and I did this in the bathroom as well. I had some paint I was going to use as trim but I wanted it darker, so I brought it back to Home Depot to see if he could just make a darker shade of grey, but he ended up making it sort of purple. I ended up using it for one wall in the bathroom.

When I moved in, we ripped out the horribly boring beige carpeting and re-did the floors. I couldn't afford full-plank hardwood, and I also thought I was going to have to save up for it and do it later, but the engineered wood flooring was much more affordable than I realized, so I was able to do it before I moved in. So it's a layer of real hardwood on top, and the rest of the plank is a different kind of wood. Tongue and groove installation, so it wasn't hard, but it still took us a little over a week.

One other benefit of knowing that I was going to do the floors was that I didn't have to worry about drop clothes when repainting, since I was going to rip out the carpet anyway.

Came out beautifully.

We had 45 year old green wool carpeting wall to wall in our house when we bought it. Must have been installed before they moved in. Underneath were pristine hardwood floors!! There were just two small spots that needed repairs where we removed a half wall. Ripped up the carpet and added $20k value in one day. Strangely, the finished basement had wood floors too. Parquet. Had them refinished and it was crazy how nice they were.

I didn’t do any accent walls last time we painted but agreee it’s a nice way to add some color and individuality I did paint the kitchen two different colors. The dining area and laundry closet are navy blue (can you tell I like navy blue?) but the rest where the wood cabinets are is neutral vey light gray - Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore.

We took all of the carpet out of the house. It was filthy. We'll put in a few area rugs.

We think the County shuts off the AC on the weekends. In my building it isn't even running; it's 90 jammin' degrees inside.

The boss got the go-ahead to send us home but I just came across the street to MLW's office. It's warm but much more livable. I wasn't going to go home, then have to come back out to get her.

I've been the painter on all of our houses over the years. It is too hard to do it anymore. We hired out for our daughters' 2 rooms recently. The painter is 6' 8" or more. He joked he didn't need a ladder.

I did get some trim paint today. I don't mind trim work with no ladders (well maybe a step stool). We built out house 20 years ago and I've kept up on freshening up the trim periodically. Now I need to do a few doors.

We've gotten to the point where we hire out the painting job as well. We had three rooms done. We took Daniel's room and turned it from dark to a beach themed guest room, since he loved the beach.

What a lovely way to remember Daniel - it looks fantastic. ❤️

I'm jealous of those textured walls - or did you get the painters to do that? I'm a big fan of textured walls, especially when you have some less than perfect ones.

Thank you! The house was built with the textured walls. Daniel actually put a hole in one of them, and the painters did a fantastic job of matching the texture before painting. I like textured walls, but I hate textured ceilings, especially that awful popcorn stuff. Fortunately, this house has flat ceilings.

Popcorn ceilings are THE worst. The house we were in for 23 years in Georgia had them, and I can attest to how impossible it is to do any repair or touching up from leaks. Terrible product!!

I don't mind lightly textured ceilings as long as they can be easily painted over!

That’s how it starts! During Covid I decided to sand and paint the trim in the kitchen because there were a few chips around the doorway and windowsill and I had some leftover paint. When it was done I realized now I had to do all the doors. Then that made the walls look awful so did those next and then ended up having to have someone come in and do the ceiling… and once the kitchen looked so good the rest of the adjoining rooms looked tired so I had to have those done as I had run out of steam to do them myself… it’s never done.

It looks like I'm going to be making (or trying to make) crown molding for the house. I also want to put up faux beams in the kitchen.

My cousin has a very dramatic ceiling with exposed beams and they are some kind of lightweight foam material. You would never know it by looking at them.

Love the beach theme. Nice tribute to your son. When my brother died in a car accident at age 20 his room was untouched for a long time. They had him in their 40s and was the last child to live at home. 42 years to have a child in the home. We are spread out in age. They eventually moved from the farmhouse to town so that is when the transition happened. Very difficult to let go of the room. He had the xmas stocking I made him with his name embroidered from when he was a toddler. The stocking was next to the White Snake poster.
