I ordered a small bottle of carrot seed oil, so naturally I got this lathe bit instead. Couldn't even figure out a way to return it and have no use for it myself. It's free for the asking:

Well, hosers. Some good news and some bad news.

First, I finally found out on Wednesday that I did get my promotion. I will go from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor. And yes, it comes with a pay bump. Of course, the official promotion doesn't go into effect until the next academic year (don't ask me why, I don't know other than "Academia and Government"), so I'm status quo for another year.

Second, my best friend of 50 years just underwent surgery this week for cancer and it went very well.

As for the bad news...my Zelda is gone

Sorry about you cat. We have had Hickok for almost 15 years now. Good for your friend. I donated a kidney to cancer last June. Last treatment is 6 weeks from today.

As for the new title. Why would you get a raise? Associate has the same number of letters as Assistant. Aren't titles supposed to get longer as your pay increases?

That's so sweet--congrats! In an ideal world, those sorts of things should be formalities but know they can slip into the farcical so quickly! Very happy for you.

Hey Folks! It's Friday! Remembering those that lost their lives on this day 25 years ago.

Had my first hummingbird sighting of the Fall season today. I've decided to put out a feeder until I can find a suitable potted plant that I can put out for them. Also, I had a strange thing happen. I was at my car crouched down checking on something and a Carolina Wren touched down next to me, and then took off. Not sure what it was doing, maybe checking out what I was looking at?

In other news, Amarillo Andy, an armadillo, saw his shadow today, so we will be having another 8 weeks of Summer here in Texas...

Platelet donation number ten is in the books. For anyone familiar with the process, they had to double-stick the return arm - the vein rolled as they stuck so I got a big bruise. For those that aren't familiar, they draw blood out of one arm, a machine extracts the platelets and plasma, then the rest is returned in the other arm. They can also do a single-arm draw and return if needed.

I got a couple of these for donating.

I am delighted to report that the three turkey chicks, who visited my backyard in late July under the watchful eye of their mama, returned for a visit.

I looked out a kitchen window and spotted the first two:

Then the third one came running behind them. They're so funny when they're running like this, sort of like an oversized duck waddle:

They seemed to recall exactly where to go and headed for the bird feeder. I tossed a little more on the ground. They were more wary of me than their mama had been, but were glad enough to get the goody.

They hung around the side yard for awhile and then wandered off. It was so great to see them still together, the mama turkey taught them well.
