What's new

The Coffee House

Busy weekend already - I’m beat! Yesterday Princess and I removed a cabinet in the in law apartment kitchen to get it ready for a new stove to replace the original (1955) pink Frigidaire wall oven and matching pink cooktop. They definitely built things sturdier back then. Lots of work but we got it done.

Today I spent the morning feeding my dahlias, mowing the front and back yards, mulching the roses, pruning the magnolia tree and pulling some cosmos out of the chaos garden. Then Princess and I did a grocery run. After that I took the dog with me to Home Depot and Pet Smart. Harlie’s fans at HD made her an honorary associate.

Glad that tropical disturbance pushed cooler temps your way - did you get rain out of it, too?
No rain at all. The back lawn is fracturing and there are cracks everywhere in the clay inspite of twice a week watering, but we are under watering restrictions. The front lawn is faring better with no cracking and the St Augustine seems to be holding up inspite of the temps and only twice weekly watering.
Lost 1/2 of a 70ft silver maple now gently reclining on the back roof.
Silver Maple are trash trees here and get brutalized in storms. We had one years ago and my sons ended up pulling the thing down, litterally tying tie-down straps to it and pulling it over... they almost killed themselves when it fell, but fortunatley no injuries. Dumb teens... 😂 It had rotted on the inside, so it looked nice, but you could poke a screwdriver into it in places.

Yup. The rest of this one is scheduled for removal--provided it doesn't split the remaining third first. Got lucky, damage-wise, with no apparent injury to our place or to the nasty creep's house and cars next door. It's that tree house vibe every time I look out the bedroom window...

Happy Labor Day to those who celebrate! Here's hoping a lot of people have the day off.

Has anyone else had a hard time getting the site to load, today? It kept timimng out on me, until this try.

It's been a mixed type of day.

I went to the clinic for strained back muscle that's been bothering me for a few weeks (yeah, I know). We stopped by Hanny's (Hannaford super market) for a couple things and MLW wanted some lottery tickets. She hasn't done anything with the draw games so she grabbed $20 in scratch-offs, which I like. I scratched the tickets and it looks like we won $33, so a net gain!

I just busted my little toe on the ottoman leg and had to clean up the blood .

Hmm, the site worked fine for me yesterday - but I had connectivity issues with other platforms, and someone on another site was complaining, too. Mercury isn't even in retrograde, so we have nothing fun to blame. ;)

After last week's wild storms, I was prepared to not see any more hummingbirds or butterflies. Figured they rode the winds right outta here! But today I've been visited by a Monarch, a Black Swallowtail, and a couple of hummers visiting my remaining Major Wheeler honeysuckle, ignoring the fresh nectar in the feeder.

Yay! I like signs of summer to linger into September.

Hope your back pain gets resolved soon - sounds like you need to watch your step around that ottoman, too! Hurray for the lottery win! Buy some ibuprofen.

Yes, I had troubles getting connected yesterday (Monday). Today has been a little hit n miss..
😎

The connection seemed to be here, only, but I wasn't browsing much more than three or four sites. It had cleared up by evening.

I haven't seen a hummer for a week, so I think they have moved south.

I'm on "light duty" for a pulled back muscle but took a short drive to the boat ramp park, yesterday. It was quiet except for a chipmunk and a couple black ducks. No shots but some gulls were flying around.

Attention all wood-working hosers!

Do any of you need lathe parts?

I ordered a small bottle of carrot seed oil, so naturally I got this lathe bit instead. Couldn't even figure out a way to return it and have no use for it myself. It's free for the asking:

Howdy Hosers! We've been having intermittent issues with our fiber broadband since Sunday afternoon. A technician is coming out on Friday afternoon. Interestingly enough, the issue only starts in the evening, which is good because I really don't want to drive down to Love Field to get my work done. Was curious if it was related to the circus coming to town this week, but who knows.

In other news, my back yard has started to fracture inspite of twice weekly watering. Most of the clover is dead, but since it is a legume, it should reappear once it cools off again. On the positive side, I guess that is a form of aeration, right? We have a glimmer of hope that these hellish temperature will subside to something more bearable, and we could definitely use some rain.

September is the new August there, it sounds like! You all have had quite the summer. Here's hoping the break in these temperatures comes soon!

I know, right? Today we did have a brief respite as the sky turned dark and it threatened to rain, but we got about six drops, I counted them myself... 😂 They did get rain elsewhere, including on the Ross fire, so hopefully that helped the firefighters.

In other news, I'm going to try my hand at making crispy lemon chicken tomorrow. I have to decide if I want to make a traditional sticky rice to go with it, which is not diabetic friendly, or just plain basmati rice which has a much smaller glucose bump. I will also make sesame green beans.

I decided to spring for a nice six layer muslin cotton sheet-blanket and fitted sheet, and boy what a dream! The thing is soft, and for the first time in a long time I wasn't kicking the sheets off due to overheating. I could do an influencer promo for this thing. 😎 I've also ordered a cloud pillow, one with a cotton case, since I'm getting away from synthetics which is what most of the "cooling" bedding are made from. They use synthetics that are cool to touch initially, but retain heat so are pretty much worthless in my book. I have a butterfly pillow for my neck, but it is synthetic and it really isn't helping.

I'm giving platelets today. I had to take a couple weeks off to let my inner elbow heal from a bad stick, last time ( needle popped out and I got some bruising along the vein.)

I splurged on a high-quality muslin blanket about 2 years ago and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made about home goods. It is warm but I don't overheat, it's soft and cozy, and it will last me for years and years. I think everyone in the world needs a good muslin blanket.
