What's new

The Coffee House

As I mentioned in another thread, my 2015 iMac is still going strong! Except for the vendor deciding not to support it any more.

I just don't understand Apple on that. 2 years old, too bad we can't, (won't), fix it, buy a new one. They forbid any shop that has a license to sell/repair their products from repairing anything more than 2 years old. I mean sure it sells new stuff, but how many customers does it P#%$ off, (all of them).

I was kicked out of a genius bar once, lady came in with a 3 or 4 y/o laptop, lost her password. They wouldn't help told her she would have to buy a new one. I told her I'd try, 5 minutes and 2 reboots later she had all her stuff back. She was happy, the store was not. I mean you can google the solution and get 5 millon hits on how to do it. Not like it was all that hard.

I was reminded today why I hate to get a new computer. Spent yesterday doing file maintenance and clean up, prepping for migration, today I was expecting to zip through until I realized that my accounting software hadn't automatically updated as it should have. That led to 2hrs on the phone with tech support to manually force it to update. Tomorrow it's back to file maintenance. clean up, and backup. Hopefully by Friday I'll be able to start downloading software on the nw box and by next week early I should be done.
Nothing goes as planned when setting up a new computer. Last time I had one built I bought the components early December and had someone put it all together in January after the holidays. January is my down time so it worked out having plenty of time to transfer and set up. I do feel your pain getting it up all to speed.

At the absurd end of the problem are diehards/survivalists who keep Nikon Coolscan scanners running loooong after Nikon said sayonara to parts-service-support. Retro OS hacks, SCSI witchcraft and too many headaches relative to results for me. Civilian-grade scanner tech has been dead in the water for ages. Wonder why?

@CherylL I know "subscription model" are dirty words to many, but it actually makes the process easier. In previous years there were always hardware compatibility and driver issues when migrating to a new computer.

Base addresses and IRQs; what a PITA.

Agreed. I had an "unlicensed" Apple repair shop replace my failing spinning drive with a 6TB SSD for a pretty reasonable price. Apple store wouldn't touch it, and certainly wouldn't have given me the option of a large capacity SSD. No issues with the repair, but unfortunately the company closed shop last year.

My bigger issue is that my applications have all gone to subscription-based, updates require a newer OS, and Apple decided not to support my hardware with the latest OS release. Perhaps I should be happy that I bought a machine with enough processing power and memory to last 8 years with no performance issues, but the fact that I have an artificial end-of-life is quite frustrating.

And yet, I find myself in the market for a new Mac desktop, so I guess I didn't learn my lesson.

Hi all, just thawing out. Put up some of the Christmas lights today, freezing fog all day. Realised that I am not 18 any more. Simple jobs in the cold are taking a lot longer. Lol

Hey hosers. Drove down to NC yesterday. Took 12 hours. I was making good time, but then just as it was getting dark, I hit some fog and rain and that slowed me way down. All in all, it was really only about an hour longer than I planned (plan = 10.5 hours of driving + about 30 minutes for breaks). My sisters and I converged on my brother's house to hang out with my mother while he and his wife are out of town at a wedding. We're cooking and baking and being silly.

Sounds like some good down time. :) Except for the driving through fog and rain part - that's white-knuckle for me.

Oh, my knuckles were definitely white. And I kept pulling over for cars that wanted to go faster so that took up even more time.

Wow stepped on the scale this morning, I'm down 21lbs since starting my diet a month ago. 10 more and I can ease up, and slide into my goal. It's been tough at times, but as I've become accustomed to the lower food intake it's been getting better. Eliminating the snacks of a night was the hardest to overcome.

Congrats. I'm stuck on a plateau and can't seem to shed anymore, even with eliminating snacks, most sugars, and beer.

Hi all, reading the post reminded me. A few years ago my wife’s I pad crashed, i tried the local computer shop. No they can’t solve the problem. Oh well with nothing to loose I looked on line at ways to save the I pad.
then worked on it all night.
next morning I handed back to mrs.... fixed.
I was lucky it could have gone the other way but as said there was nothing to loose
