Upgrading to new NEW DSLR from D5100 suggestions.

Hello, I am wanting to upgrade to a better DSLR the d5100 has blown its last hoorah last Saturday What would be good for music and street photography. Nikon or Canon preferred. Also must be one camera not 2 separate cameras and must include prices for lenses and a flash budget is 1500 USD.

For music I would go for Nikon D610 and for street I would go for Fuji X100s. Probllem is - it is two different cameras. Very different.

I am prejudiced , as I now own a Nikon D600. This camera was rated one of the best DSLR. Unfortunately it has has some minor flaw . Without that flaw it would have still been 2000.00, Nikon wanting to improve. It's image replaced it with the D610. From a consumer point of view, this put a real bargain out there. I have seen them for 1325.00 this week refurbished. This is a full frame camera at a DX price. The flaw involves self cleaning the sensor. But only in isolated insolence . If I had the money I'd buy another for a back up. Just my 2 cents worth. Later. Ed

Your budget is 150 USD?

You won't be able to get anything better than a D5100 with your budget.

If you meant 1500 USD then I would recommend the Canon 70D or the Nikon D7100.

Well if your budget is only $150 then you can forget DSLR - in fact you would barely be able to get a decent external flash unit for that price. Well I guess you could get a DSLR - but it's most likely going to be something very old in the 6-8 mp range. If you already have/had a D5100 your best bet would be to stick with Nikon and reuse your current lenses. If you can afford it I'd look at either the D7100 or D7200. Nothing against Canon mind you, they make a capable enough camera - but it makes more sense to stick with Nikon if you already have some Nikon equipment. If such isn't the case, honestly I'd still recommend going Nikon, personally I think you get more value for your money particularly if your buying used. The image quality is generally much better on the Nikon when compared to a Canon body at the same price point. Just my two cents worth of course, YMMV

Well I guess the next question then is what sort of photography do you do most often, and what sort of equipment do you have on hand already (lenses, etc..)

I will make it short and sweet.
Get the Nikon D7100 with 18-105mm VR or the 18-140mm VR kit lenses and to that add the 50mm 1.8G for night photography.
These 2 lenses should be around youe asking prices.

The Nikon D7100 is in my eyes the best camera in its price range, I have it and used it in various situations and somehow it just keep amazing me with its sharp pictures and fantastic low light performance.
For your needs I would say go with a full frame but your price will not allow it so I think the D7100 is the second best option and I have a feeling you will thank me for getting it.

Well I'd most likely look at the 7100, it doesn't sound like you need a long telephoto reach for the most part so as someone else suggested the 18-105 would be a great all around work horse lens and a nice fast prime for night photography, if you shop around you'll probably have enough left over for a usable flash unit and a few other accessories.

Well honestly full frame would probably be overkill for what you need, at least at the moment. Personally I think your much better off going down a step or two with the body and concentrate more on the lenses to start with - you can always upgrade the body easily enough and sell the old one later, they do hold their value fairly well. Believe me, you'll get much better results with a less advanced body and good glass than you will with a really super advanced body and mediocre glass.
