WHAT GOES/WHAT STAYS - TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY

I am in the same predicament, in that I will be leaving on vacation soon. I have decided on bringing 3 lenses, and depending on what we end up doing for the day... THAT will be the determining factor on the lens that gets plopped on the camera.

I'm bringing the 50mm 1.8, the 85mm 1.8 and a 17-50 2.8.

I'm POSITIVE I will regret having brought all three.

If I didn't bring all three, I'm POSITIVE I would regret not bringing the one I left at home.

In your case I'm guessing the 17-50 and the 85 would probably be the best two lens combo, if just one, I'd probably go with the 17-50.

If choosing from what you have, take them both on the trip. The 35mm is so compact and small that you can put it in one of those bubble wrap sleeves and pop it in your purse, that way you have the option. If you don't feel like toting around the zoom, use the 35 and put the other in your room safe. The possibilities are endless if you are talking about buying another (new or used) lens. I think every one on here likely has their own special binky lens that they like for vacation/walk-around. Many recommend the Sigma 17-50 or the Nikon 18-70 that TiredIron mentioned above. Personally I love my Sigma 17-70 2.8 that I picked up used and is almost always my first choice during vacations. You could ask 10 people and get 10 different suggestions.

I have the 18-70 and it is a decent lens, but I often take just the 35mm on day trips. If I just went places with one lens then what was the point of taking an interchangeable lens camera.

yeah so im like broke and my wife wants to become 51 percent owner in a restaurant that is losing money. Which i really cant afford and dont want anything to do with

i was wondering what lens i should take with me to escape with

Unless the purpose of the travel is to engage in photography, I would invest in a mirrorless camera with a slightly wide to slightly long zoom lens to record the highlights of the trip. If the purpose is to do photography then you need to take whatever gets the job done.

This is what they are for.....

Ship it all and decide what to use when you get there.

hmmmm.....:bom: very good point!!!!!! but remember, what goes, what stays.... :allteeth:

If pictures of the trip are important, take good lenses.
If you don't care, take the least you can.

Travel pictures are really important to me so I take 2 bodies and 5 lenses.
Sony A7 24-70
Oly OMD 5 and Oly EP3 with 12-35, 35-100, 45 i.7, 20 1.7

The second row together weight less than the first row.
I use the Sony when ultimate IQ is important - and generally when traveling by car.
For walkaround I carry the Olympus and lenses.

The old question - quantity versus quality and more or less I'm in the same predicament. I like to travel light mostly cause I travel solo and not all that young anymore. I'm torn between taking my Nikon 35mm Prime lens apposed to my Sigma 18-250mm Zoom. I'll be taking a lot of nature shots some landscapes, but not sure if my very light an convenient 35 will live the expectations. Any suggestions out there? By the way, I know some will suggest me taking both, but I wouldn't want to constantly switch between lenses either. Ohhh and another by the way, my work buddy is a Nikon D7100.
take both :D
neither is terribly heavy.
but oh hear me...last trip I made, I mostly used a Lumix GM-1 with a 12-32mm kit lens
the trip before I carried a Panasonic Lumix LX5
This upcoming trip, I will be using my brand new Olympus TG4 :D
I also use my phone a lot.
