What's new

What is an appropriate amount of time to have/be a guest?

On the flip side of the coin ... maybe you should spend 2-3 weeks at their place ...

Technically I stay the required 300 feet away if you are not home when I stop in for a visit :)
Oh good!! Thats a relief.

I knew my *gaurd dog* wasn't intimidating enough. Next time Im going for a *Tibetan mastiff
.

The problem with this tactic is that if we visit them, they still have "travel money" to come visit us and I have to go through this twice a year instead of once. I'be been trying to amend my tactics for years now. ;-)

I tend to agree with most everyone here. If I have guests that have travelled quite some distance (like another country) then they can stay a day or two, after that your butt is in a hotel. I like my space and find that company cramps my style. A guest's holiday does not equate to a holiday for me. I usually need a holiday after a guest leaves lol

I would suggest just going around the house naked all the time....
but all that did for us was start a tradition of liqueur fueled naked pool parties....
and a friend that stayed with us for a year.

so...
i say go for it.
good times. good times.

I love curry.
I got a divorce partly because I never set limits on how long in-laws could visit. What was cool and okay in the beginning drove me crazy after a while.

Prenupts are great because you can discuss that kind of crap beforehand. Learn the deal breakers as early as you can.

This is EXACTLY how I feel. I can keep up with hosting for about a week, thinking "this isn't so bad" After that, every little thing starts to annoy me, and its a downward spiral ending with me practically kicking them out the door. I saw them off about an hour ago and I feel like I need a few days recovery for myself, then a few days for my house, and its already time to start teaching up again on tuesday.

Ya only live once as far as I can tell.

Prenups might be practical, you know, when you don't marry someone you've only known for two weeks. (and oh BOY was that a good move. Had I met the family first, I may have chickened out.)

No divorce here though. If things do continue, I will just start taking my own vacation for those two weeks.
We have a good excuse next year though, which will make the news sting less. DS can't take two weeks off from school again next year, and we can't have company in the house during school hours! Problem solved. If DH doesn't tell them, I am happy to break the news to them myself.

PS- have you ever tried curry in your deviled eggs? SOOOO good.

Jazzie, the hardest part sometimes is for us women to actually say "NO" to company, especially family, as I tend to feel selfish for not allowing company to stay, however I have come to realize it is not being selfish or mean, it is preservation. I am preserving my own sanity, preserving my home and most of all preserving a relationship with whomever wanted to stay. I had company stay for about a week or so a couple years ago, drove me freekin' nuts - vowed never again and that was my sister and niece lol....1-800-Hotwire (find a local hotel deal)... :)

That only leaves one final option ... move.

Or, next year, tell them you moved and send them the "new" address. Anybody else piss you off recently? Do you have their address?

(Barring special/unforeseen circumstances of corse.)

What do you consider to be an appropriate amount of time to stay with family for a visit?

(Don't inquire as to why I am asking, it's a can of worms I'm sure you'd like to leave shut ;-) )

15 minutes. Tops. Oh, and red wine goes best with canned worm. Lol
:giggle: I did feel pretty giddy last night when dinner wasn't received well. (Curry is one of those love it or hate it spices again) Perhaps next time we should go vegetarian on them. Im sure there are some healthy recipes that are just terrible out there, right?

No beer- Check
Bad food- Check
Its too bad I can't isolate bed bugs to stay in one room.
Perhaps scratchy sheets would do it? Or take the electric blanket off the bed?
I already hid the space heater. (see, definitely not going to heaven)

Get some brochures from local hotels, leave them on the nightstand. Next go to the store and get one of those little remote control cars and a squeak toy for a dog. Tape the squeak toy to the back wheels of the vehicle and place it under the bed. At about 2 AM grab the remote and move the car back and forth at odd intervals so it keeps running over the squeak toy.

If they don't fall for the subtle stuff, well hit a novelty shop and get some fart spray for use in the guest bedroom. Lol

One tip.

No matter how much you want god to strike them down or take them away from the visit - NEVER take them for a round of Crazy Golf during a thunderstorm (if you want a good idea of why not just go watch Father Ted ^^)
