What is an appropriate amount of time to have/be a guest?

Take all of the whips, masks, restraints and assorted other leather-latex paraphernalia and start hanging it on the walls in the guest room and tell them they are more than welcome to stay but they will have to vacate the guest room every night from 11 PM to 4 AM as that is "play time". Either they will stay at a hotel or you will have a much more "interesting" time during their visits

I tend to agree with most everyone here. If I have guests that have travelled quite some distance (like another country) then they can stay a day or two, after that your butt is in a hotel. I like my space and find that company cramps my style. A guest's holiday does not equate to a holiday for me. I usually need a holiday after a guest leaves lol

This is EXACTLY how I feel. I can keep up with hosting for about a week, thinking "this isn't so bad" After that, every little thing starts to annoy me, and its a downward spiral ending with me practically kicking them out the door. I saw them off about an hour ago and I feel like I need a few days recovery for myself, then a few days for my house, and its already time to start teaching up again on tuesday.

Jazzie, the hardest part sometimes is for us women to actually say "NO" to company, especially family, as I tend to feel selfish for not allowing company to stay, however I have come to realize it is not being selfish or mean, it is preservation. I am preserving my own sanity, preserving my home and most of all preserving a relationship with whomever wanted to stay. I had company stay for about a week or so a couple years ago, drove me freekin' nuts - vowed never again and that was my sister and niece lol....1-800-Hotwire (find a local hotel deal)...

I am definitely coming to realize this. I need to put MY family first. I am a much better mom/wife/daughter in law when I am not screaming inside my head all day. Yesterday I did NOTHING but sit and read a book ALL day (besides cooking of corse) because I needed to "escape" (Divergent is an EXCELLENT read by the way) I love for my kids to get to know their family, but everything in moderation, right??

On the flip side of the coin ... maybe you should spend 2-3 weeks at their place ...

The problem with this tactic is that if we visit them, they still have "travel money" to come visit us and I have to go through this twice a year instead of once. I'be been trying to amend my tactics for years now. ;-)

That only leaves one final option ... move.

PS- have you ever tried curry in your deviled eggs? SOOOO good.

I have not tried that yet, but I will put it on pretty much anything that I would put black pepper on. Sounds good.

Do it, and soon so you dont forget. You may never eat them another way again. an obscene amount of mayo, hint of mustard, good dose of curry and you'll be set!

Much better option. I LOVE watching my kids grow up in this house. Its pretty spectacular !

If they don't fall for the subtle stuff, well hit a novelty shop and get some fart spray for use in the guest bedroom. Lol

My sister got some of that stuff whilst we were on one of those steam-train trips around one or two little towns. It was the classic steamtrain where coaches had compartments. Now there's was a good 7 or so of us on the trip (so about a compartment full) but all the compartments were full (so that meant seats in the communal areas with normal people). Soooo

she used it.

It smelt like blocked drains - of course the people in the compartment unlucky enough to experience it thought it was a drain leak from the on-board toilet and vacated the compartment. A window down and a few moments later and it was gone and we had a compartment.


We also stole the stuff off her and hid it least she got other ideas!

I haven't read evry single post yet so this may have been mentioned. I agree with most that 3 days is good if they live within a certain distance (days drive or flight). If they are coming from somewhere in Europe then a week, Asia I would say 2-3 weeks. At the same time I would expect them to help regardless of how long they are staying. If I even spend the night at a friends I at least offer to change/wash the sheets before I leave. If I'm there for a few days I try to help with daily chores and provide at least one meal. Maybe you could try telling them if they insist on staying with you they can be in charge of dinner on 2 specific nights a week or something.

3 days? Yikes. When they show up on my doorstep, the second they start to take off their coats I just tell them, "You'll want to leave those on".

Another simple option is to convert the guest room. Also, if you have a sleeper sofa, get rid of it. Tell them they're welcome to stay, but they'll have to sleep on the living room floor. Our spare bedroom is used for storage and our loft functions as my studio. If anyone wants to stay here they have to sleep on the floor or the couch, knowing that they'll be up with the sun (or before) and they won't get to sleep until we're ready to go to bed. This is usually enough deterrent. My mother in law tried staying here for a week once. . . . now she just gets a hotel.

Sounds like a date. When can I expect the personal delivery? I'll need a few days to get my photo studio back in order, there is a bed in there right now....but now that I think about it, maybe we'll leave it there.
