Your background is extremely distractive. I'd see if there were other angles that would provide you with a cleaner background. You might also want to crouch and shoot upwards with the sky as your background. Never tried it myself, but I have seen such shots before. That red sky is also distracting me. If you're using flash, try and underexposure the background by a stop or two, and leave the subject properly exposed. Or turn that sky down in post processing. Not fond of that fence, either.

You've freezed the motion, though. That's good.

Yeah Tracy its kinda different with rollerbladers though seen as the focus would be on just their feet. Not sure what you mean by getting more of his feet in the shot? i was using a 50 and if i got any closer you wouldnt see where hes landing. And Tyler I was more just playing along to KmH's ? marks but yeah im not gonna shoot photos like I see on tumblr where you just see a skater in the sky with nothing below them or around them, if you look in skate magazines you'd never see that type of shot, its always the obstacle in the shot.

Yeah Omofo I didn't read the book on it, i just know from 8 years skating experience, seen alot of mags. If you find the book though make sure to let me know!

You didn't read my post did you? I said it's okay to have some shots from a lower perspective, if the scenery is established in the set of photos. Do you follow?

Yeah i do follow you, i usually do it most times, just found it hard to do with the 50

Feel free to ignore Compaq....

My suggestions (much like the others have already mentioned) lower angle, tighter comp, and clone out/darken the background. Getting a good angle and a clear view of the face in a action shots like this is a must....anything else should be chimped off your camera. Also, using your flash off camera can work wonders for the lighting in these situation.

When I'm shooting Skate/BMX I try to live by the rule of "where did they come from and where are they going", this will always add a sense of reality and scale to the image.

Ummm what extreme sports photos are you looking at where they look and smile at the camera?
I think taking out the lights makes a big difference

Thanks for the response, I only have the flash on my camera for now. I'm not sure which flash would be best to purchase. I know of the rule, if you look at my previous response to someone here I said I try to follow that rule all the time, i thought i did with this shot aswell, just not much of 'where hes going' could be shown without losing the cool sky x

The holy grail of sports action photography is faces and the expressions that show the determination, effort, and emotions of the athlete at that moment.

Not in skating/biking. No skater... looks at a picture in a mag and rates the trick based on how hard the guys facial expression looks... he rates it on how difficult the trick is/the surrounding/ the obstacle.

It would seem that he does in this case. I've been reading skate mags and skating since 1997 and now my kids are skateboarders. I've literally seen millions of amazing skate photos where you couldn't see the skaters face.

I quick google search will tell you show you that.

But then again, maybe the photogs for TWS and Thrasher need to take a lesson from you!

Tell me this isn't a good photo -

As a skateboarder I can tell I don't care about seeing a skaters face in a photo. I want to see the obstacle and I want to see the skaters body language. We look at a pic and try to judge how difficult the trick was for that particular skater. You do this by checking their body language. Not facial expressions. 9 times out of 10, a skater will have the same expression anyway unless they're about to eat it.
