Engagement Session Critique

Hello friends,


Would love some feedback on these engagement images. What do you like? What do you not like. Don't worry I have thick skin.

Images are processed with VSCO FILM and if you would like a tutorial on how I processed them let me know.

Not my favorite cliché.

Possibly one decent one, #2.

2,3,4,5 are decent. I really LIKED the reflection motif, and thought you pulled it off very well. The last two, the oddly-toned B&W images are unappealing to me...just do NOT like that "look" in procesing.

In shot #1, she has her FEET planted way far from him, and then is bent over and leaning in toward him at the chest him...that's just not a convincing body posture...she's FAR away from him at the bottom, and in contact at the chest...psychologically, that is just...wrong. That body position and body language is exactly the way a person hugs an intolerable aunt or other obnoxious relative at a forced or perfunctory introduction, like at a wedding or at Christmas...

I really do not like reflection shots (in general). They are desperate and cliche.

My favorite out of the set is number two.

Overall, these need a lot of help.

First the setting... is that who that couple is? Is that what they are about? If so, fine... but if not... yeesh. Bad setting.

The images are all washed way out in a way that is pretty distracting.

The weed in the first one is pretty distracting.

I think the reflection images are an interesting idea with no cohesive approach to the composition, so they don't work.

The expression of the woman on #2 is nice.

Overall, if I were the couple I would be -very- dissatisfied with these. Sorry.

I'm in the minority here, but I really like #3, but it ends there. Not a fan of the processing in the rest, nor the railroad tracks motif.

Number 2 is killer. The reflection shots are hard to look at because they're so busy. I have to TRY to see the couple. And I like the composition of the BW shots but the toning is odd. I'd like to see much darker blacks with less middle gray.

I agree #2 is, by a large margin, the best of the series.

I down rate #1 because of the dark horizontal line going through their heads, the centered and not very dynamic composition and being able to see through the other side of the railroad car above their heads.

I too find the reflection shots way to busy, and the low contrast and hazy B&W processing very unappealing.

Are we doing C&C on a paid shoot?

I wanted to expand on my above comment. There is no dynamic range in the black and whites. The "muddy" or "hazy" look can be popular but it only works when you have good blacks and whites to work with. I would redo the images into a traditional black and white and punch the blacks a little and round file the last B&W.

I like the idea of #3. I think you could process it a little better to bring out the couple.

#1 I like the idea, however if you framed it with the couple on the left/right side of the frame and the plant on the right/left of the couple it would lead the photo more to the couple.

I really Like #3, beautiful image!

Out of the window shots #5 was my favourite, great creative shot!

Its impressive you were using film, not many people do these days! Great job, something I want to learn.. one day

Personally the location reeeeaaaally doesn't translate as romantic or affectionate at all to me, and is very messy. My focus goes straight to all of the garbage, and I can't help but immediately think how out of place the couple is for an engagement shoot.
