oh nice transformation! Like the concept also. Was at electronics store today and a lady was with her daughter getting help as I overhear the mother say "What kind of phone do you have?" to her girl who was easily under 8. :meh:

I am generally not a fan of B&W, but in this case I think it makes for a superior picture. If you'd just cropped the original, the colors would have competed with and detracted from mood. B&W emphasizes the 'seriousness' of the subject. (Maybe I'll have to consider going B&W in some of my pictures in the future.)

This is more work than a simple conversion.
I made a mask for the figures and rest of the foreground and pulled them to an upper layer.
Then I duplicated the bottom layer used the same mask to clip the figures and foreground out of the interemdiate layer.
Then I defocussed the intermediate layer and used a gradient on the layer mask so the further away points were most out of focus.
Then sharpened only the foreground layer
Merged them to a new top layer and converted to B&W
Somewhere in there, I don't remember when, I created a dodge burn layer for the hot spots in the background.

I like the cropped version very much. It has an intimate feel about it. The only thing I did notice is some haloing on grandpa and grandsons heads. I am viewing on my iPad so that could be why tho.

No, I think you could be correct, there is a problem (for me at least) with de focusing around an intricate mask. this was edited 3 years ago before the 'refine edge tool' was added to PS. if I have time This week I will re-edit this and try some ways to get around the halo isn't.

"The original" appears to be an entirely different frame. Not that it matters. I do like the B&W treatment though...looks good as a B&W, and the colors don't add anything to the shot. Little kids today love screens. I was paying for some stuff at Target this weekend when a little girl of about the same age had a screaming episode in her mother's arms, when her mom would not let her "play" with the checkout line's PIN keypad screen.

I actually noticed it too. In the original that the man had a few stray hairs that aren't in the edit, so perhaps some cloning artifact as well?

Actually, I was just looking back at it and it isn't the original. Look at the kid - in the edit, he's pointing with his right arm. In the second picture, he's pointing with his left.
