How to create double exposures in photoshop?

If anyone wants to explain how to properly do this through photoshop so I and some other members can properly have explained this technique or through tutorial. ?

Set up camera on tripod, take 1 photo, take 2nd photo with a different detail but same framing. Put photo's on computer. Import as 2 layers in photoshop and align layers. Create a layer mask on top layer and paint in the portion of the image that contains the relevent pixels using black on the layer mask, save in your file format of choice.

or to do the more modern sillouette with the photo behind it: create layer mask on background layer, use selection tools on the sillouette layer to select the relevent portion of image, with the selection still live turn off the sillouette layer and click on the background layer mask and paint in the reveal (black).
