What's new

How was this picture taken??

With a very short focal length (wide angle) lens and a small aperture to create extreme depth of field. EXIF data indicates 17mm focal length and an aperture of f22.

Manual focus, probably. When focus is critical, such as in this image, I wouldn't let the camera choose. It may choose to focus on the ball, leaving the player OOF, or the player which would put the ball OOF.

I would venture to say the focus point is somewhere in her wrist/forearm.

I have to agree with EchoingWhisper. This was not shot at f/22. It was shot at f/11, 1/500, 17mm. Not sure where you got f/22 from tirediron.

Maybe because a FX is supposed to get the same amount of depth of field at 2 and 1/4 stops smaller aperture?

TamiAz, The main thing is you'll need a wide angle lens, somewhere around 12mm on a digital crop sensor or 20mm on a FX/35mm body. Stopped down to get background in focus.

Thank you for your responses...I don't have a wide angle lens for that type of picture. I'm a newbie and have two lenses that came with my Nikon, which are 55-300mm and 18-55mm. Is it possible to rent lenses? I think I read that somewhere, but can't remember for sure.

Since this picture has been done with an old Nikon D1H with crop factor like APS-C, at 17mm, before renting a lens just try with your 18-55 at 18mm, f/11 or so, staying very close to the ball. Cheap test, likely sufficient ;) .

Ok, here is my first attempt.. We were in the garage, so don't pay attention to the background...I'm just practicing. How do I get both my daughter and the ball in focus? I want to take the picture in her uniform at a softball field. Thank you.

I know I'm way off here, so please help me out!! :)

I used 18mm lens, f/13, ISO 200, 1/30s.

It also looks like a flash was used to illuminate her face, while slightly underexposing the background.

The D1H is a DX body and the person taking this is using a 17mm. I think a 12mm would be too much.
