What's new

Mac Pro or PC

Sounds like you are tossing between a new Desktop and a Laptop (?), unless I have not been reading this right ?

Ahhhhhh, I would buy the Tube-thing ... just because it reminds me of R2D2, or a office trash can that Dyson would make.
Well for a touch over 9k you can configure one that will do just about as much as R2D2. Of course that is the fully blown top of the line kick @$$ all day and all night long configuration that is overkill unless you are doing some very serious video or 3D graphis/cad rendering.

I remember when the Mac Pro came out in 2013. The Apple store had a fully loaded best of the best model on the floor. They also had Adobe products on it. It fired up Photoshop so fast you didn't get to see the startup screen, just a blip and Photoshop was open.

He is a professional artist. He has no business using a windows box. Come on people, really? He is getting paid to deliver and windows is on the cusp of being gone anyway. The hardware and software drivers alone make this question a no brainer. People always think it is the hardware but it isn't, that is what drives the industry.

SNIP>>> I love my fully loaded 27" iMac. If I was doing video editing I would have looked at a Mac Pro when I got the iMac, but I just don't need the power.

I was at the home of one of this state's better-known glamour shooters about two weeks ago, after I had sold him my 400mm f/3.5 ED~IF Nikkor lens. He brewed us each an espresso,m and then we headed to the Art Room. He had two 27 inch iMacs side by side. We looked at hundred of images. I marvelled at the display quality more so than anything.

Ummmm..have you seen the display quality of the new 27 inch iMacs?

It's far,far better than the iMac I am working on right now.

I dunno...for me, "I am the slopwest" part of any computer system. I thionk too much emphasis is placed on the computer's sheer speed, when the real issue is stability, ease of use, and good integration with the software and hardware--which is where APple has been excellent for 22 years for me, poersonally.

The high-end Pro-level tower configuration Macs are great...I've owned three since 1999--and ALL three still work!

it';s a tricky call though...I've been an Apople guy since 1990 with the Mac Classic-type little boxes...My first PC was a tricked out Sony VAIO in 2003 or 04, about $3,000. Got a virus, I fixed it, got a horrific kernel virus, and the OS exploded, and I could not get it repaired right. it still sits in the closet... I had a rescue OS disc made, but it will not boot even in Safe Mode, and I do not know what to do. I just said "eff it...and kept using my MacPro and iMac

I might consider a refurbished high-end Mac, or even a used one that's 18 months old.

Yep, I have the new 27" iMac. I know exactly what you are saying.

He is a professional artist. He has no business using a windows box. Come on people, really? He is getting paid to deliver and windows is on the cusp of being gone anyway. The hardware and software drivers alone make this question a no brainer. People always think it is the hardware but it isn't, that is what drives the industry.

Windows on its way out? Really? First of all drivers are not an issue. There are a ton more hardware options than Mac's. Windows isn't going anywhere. I can build a more powerful computer at 1/2 the cost of a Mac that will also be more upgradeable lasting me a lot longer. I can choose what I want instead of Apple dictating what I need and what I can do. And OP is an occasional gamer which a PC would be better. Apple tends to make their accessories obsolete when they come out with new computers and phones making you shell out even more money.

Which is why Windows is inherently less stable than OS. Microsoft trys to make it work with ever piece of hardware out there be it good, decent or some crap Bob and Larry put together in their basement.

You can not, impossible as a one man show. This is not about building g a computer, any monkey can do that. We're talking about hardware systems and integrating with software. Apple, Lenovo, Super Micro, Asus, Gigabyte, they all have a life cycle. Some better than others. Mac Pro is a professional, high quality electronic device. He is a professional and deserves a quality work flow experience. He is severely limited by a PC investment.

I guess being a tech I prefer to choose the hardware I want. And Windows 7 and Windows 10 are very stable. At work we deal with over 5,000 PC's that we manage. Sure Mac OS has some good things going for it but it is nowhere as flexible.
I am not saying Windows is better or Mac is better, its personal preference. But there is nothing that Mac can do that Windows can't and stating that a professional has no business using Windows is the biggest BS.

Tell me how he is limited by a PC investment. That is utter crap.

In all respect Brent, I did. Software integration is very important for a professional. Hardware integration is very important for the professional. These two attributes help drive a business vision seamlessly. In photography, delivering an image of high quality, on time, is crucial. This is what drives Apple and they deliver. Sure, there is quality hardware at half the cost but they are not matched with things unseen. Stability, performance, precision come to mind. When you design voltage regulation in a VRM or bus area as an example, apple standards are more difficult to obtain.
