I've used toilet paper (unused of course.. haha) over the pop up to diffuse.

Given the choice between pop-up flash and the sun.. the sun wins every time.
Given the choice between no natural light or pop-up flash, I'll put my camera away and have a beer.
The only nice images I've ever gotten from a pop-up flash are when it's set to rear-curtain sync..

I use flash even when I have good sunlight, for a touch of fill and pop. I find it easier to use after 30 years than taking the trouble of setting up reflectors even.

Pop flashes are not great... but better than not getting the shot at all! Properly used, even pop-up flash can give some good images. Admittedly, I never use mine... not even for OC flash control.
