My question is and I think I all ready know the answer but I'll ask anyways....

Am I to close to use the flash?

Yes, BUT if you (I do this the ghetto way when I rarely use flash) put a white card or piece if paper angled up in front if the flash so it bounces the light up towards the ceiling, you'll have better results

I also have used a tissue and a little scotch tape to make an impromptu diffuser. Take a single layer, tape one side to your camera right behind the flash and let it hang over your flash. Sometimes you have to tear off any excess that is in front of your lense. It is a cheap and quick way to diffuse the light and make it much more friendly to the subject.

Every time I do that, the flash shoots right through. But my wife doesn't like the thick tissues, so maybe I'll try stacking them

pop-up flash diffuser... there are others, but I have seen this one do decently. Never used it myself though...

Sometimes you get what you pay for! It was be easy to " DIY fab" that up too...

Sunlight is better than flash? lol! I would say it is equal, and flash has the advantage of being portable and available 24/7! Light is light is light... it is how you use it that counts!

Because I am such a DSLR newbie I'll stick with the white card trick! Over the next few months my wish list is a new lense and a speedlight.. And perhars a few classes!

Given the choice between pop-up flash and the sun.. the sun wins every time.
Given the choice between no natural light or pop-up flash, I'll put my camera away and have a beer.
The only nice images I've ever gotten from a pop-up flash are when it's set to rear-curtain sync..
