Here's my little piece of advice to you, don't call someone who is old enough to be your mother "chick", it shows a lack of maturity and inability to accept criticism. My advice to your friend still stands, even if she is 15. If she grown up enough to start a business then she needs to do it correctly. She needs to have a business license and what ever other permits your state requires.

well you were being rude. and i asked about feedback on the PICTURE not on how to run a business! she doesnt even charge money so idk where you got that from. all of her photo shoots are FREE just like mine. i said she WANTED to start a business and become a professional when she grows up.

she wants to be a professional when she gets older(even though she pretty much is one now)

As for the picture I do believe it does have harsh lighting problems. but it's something to work on. I'm still learning, reading, and trying to put it all into practice.

i said she WANTS to be a professional when she gets OLDER. and that she pretty much is one now. i said the last part becuase i thought she was good. but thanks for the advice.

The fact that you thought she was being rude definitely displays the fact that you have the mentality of a 15 year old child.

Simmadownnah.

yes i am a 15 year old child. sorry i dont have the mind set or maturity of an adult

Hey I just make a melted cheese sandwich, does that make me a chef?

Sorry, I know your only 15, your friend has a long way to go before she can call herself a photographer

umm chick we are 15. and yes she did ask for feedback? thats the whole reason i did this is so she could see what she needed to improve on. she is sitting right here next to me. she wont have her internet to check her profile if she created one so i told her to just put it up on mine.

You won't be around long, because you don't understand what is going on.

she is a photographer a VERY GOOD one at that. this is one of the bad pictures out of the bunch. she wanted to know how she could improve on it thats why we put it on here.

what dont i understand?

If I take a bad photo I know exactly what was wrong with it and how I can improve it. If I have ever taken a photo like that it would have never even make its way to my computer yet alone let anyone to see it.

What previous training has your friend had to make her a VERY GOOD photographer?

we are young we need help and advice. and she's been shooting for 3 years now. it wasnt a bad photo. she wanted people to see it so she could figure out how to improve it.

Answer the question asked.

"What previous TRAINING has your friend had to make her a 'very good' photographer?"

I have another question.

Who's metric are we using to judge her work?

I dont think that was rude at all, she was offering you or your friend advice that you probably didn't know. Instead of being rude about it you should have thanked her. If your friend wants to be a professional when she "grows up" I hope she doesn't share your snotty attitude when others are trying to help.

Anyways the baby is under exposed, the background is over exposed. When I look at the picture my eyes are drawn to the bright yellow of the background and not the subject. I would try using a reflector next time on the baby and maybe take the photo from a different angle to avoid the bright background or try fixing it in Photoshop.

just cuz we're young doesnt mean we dont know about how to start a business. we were perfectly aware. but thanks for the advice. she'll try that next time

Please.

Sweetheart, there are grownass ADULTS that don't know how to start a business... and it's not because they're not smart, or mature, or grown up... it's because business is an ENTIRELY different animal then setting up a lemonade stand, or raising a couple bucks for your soccer team.

People get whole bachelors... MASTERS degrees in business because it takes a LOT of study. A LOT of work. A lot of math and statistics and headaches that you couldn't even begin to comprehend.

Do photographers need to get a master's degree in business to run one? No... but it takes more than throwing up a Facebook page and a couple of improperly exposed images.

I'm not trying to discourage your friend's... or yours... because I highly doubt this friend really exists and that you're just displacing the story to take the heat off of yourself... dreams. By all means, grow up and be a photographer and start a business... but don't be a cocky kid about it.

First and foremost you need to LEARN the craft. Crawl before you walk. Then walk before you run. THEN start a business.

Do as MWC stated and find out your state laws. You have to decide how you're going to run your business... how you're going to register. Who are you going to get to do your taxes? Can you do them yourself? Do you hire an accountant? Are you going to have a partnership, an LLC, a sole proprietorship?

What about insurance?

What will you do for marketing?

What about setting your rates high enough to sustain yourself?

There's A LOT that goes into it.

You're 15. It's OKAY if you don't know right now.

But being cocky and defensive and stating you "know" how to run a business is only going to gain you more negative attention here.

Do yourself a favor and humble yourself.

No. No she's not. That's the cold hard truth.

Not rude. Not mean.

Just the truth.

If she were a *very* good photographer her bad pictures would still be better than this one. She may be better than your 15 year old friends. She may be better than your aunt who just bought her very first Canon 1D Mark III to take pictures of her little bundle of joy with... but she really does have a long way to go.

The sooner the both of you can admit that... the sooner you humble yourselves to that... the sooner you can get to learning and then ACTUALLY getting better.

When we all started out we ALL sucked.

NONE of us were "very good" from the get go.

*I* STILL suck.

But the difference between you and me is that I can say that.

I can look at someone and say, "This sucks. But I'm going to learn from it and get better."

I've taken away A LOT from this forum.

I have had my ass handed to me more times than I can count.

I just got my ass handed to me a day or two ago... but I appreciate that because it makes me *better*.

Stop being so damned defensive, and take the advice people here are giving you. They're trying to HELP you, and you come back and call them names and insult them. That's only going to yield *ACTUAL* rudeness from them.

And yes. You're a 15 year old child.

No, I don't expect you to behave like a 25 year old adult.

But I DO know a great many 15 year olds with MUCH better attitudes than you.

Some of them are on this forum, and get the help they want and need without as much trouble as you're getting from the very same members here.

Why are you sitting here trying to convince experienced photographers that it wasn't a bad photo? In what world does that logic make sense? You show a bad photo... photographers state how it's bad and even offer advice on how to do it better next time... and then you sit and say "it's not a bad photo", like all of a sudden we're going to go "Oh holy cow, you're RIGHT! It's NOT! I SEE it now!"

And by the way, 3 years doesn't mean anything.

I know people who have been shooting for way less than that and take better images than the "not bad" one displayed above.

My statement in my above post still stands: Humble yourself and stop being so defensive.
