I am finally going off camera (scary) I am wanting general tips for using them. What's a good placent I feel I see people mostly putting them over their heads pointing down about a 45 angle. With sun do you use the sun as backlighting? Any tips at all are appreciated!

It will depend on where you want the shadows to fall. - short lighting, broad lighting, Rembrandt lighting, side lighting, butterfly lighting, high key, low key, dramatic, fashion, light-on-light, under lighting, etc.

there's a good book I read a while ago called 'light science and magic' that goes over things like placement, reflection, angles, etc, very well. its a good read if you're getting into OCF stuff...so is that strobist site Tirediron linked to.
