I joined the site just today ! Within a few minutes I was learning new things and really enjoying the exchange of information. I haven't run into the part yet where I have to pay to be in it, but I am a paying member of other forums on other subjects. With my first thread... WHACK...I got told I am so unprofessional that I am beneath being answered !

I had to go back and check the homepage, just to make sure this forum is not intended only for professional photographers.

Hmmmm.....then I see this thread about the very subject of slamming nubies.

Google has a saying..."the competition is only one click away"

I am sticking around, I guess that is what they made a feature where one can ignore members if they want too.

It is an issue and I don't even have an avatar yet (thank heaven).

As a stop-gap measure before banning these repeat offenders, I am suggesting that a new user group be formed that bars access to the beginners forum, and other forums where basic assistance is requested. This will be similar to the user group that allows access to the Nude forum. There are plenty of helpful members here that will be happy to assist new members asking questions. As it is, new members to this forum seem to be open targets for insults.

The core problem to this is that there is no area that beginners cannot use (even the subscribers section and nude/NSFW/Adult forum). It would be a user group that would limit them to nothing on the site.

The way that we generally aim to cure disruption in the manner that has been outlined is to lead by example. To generally aim to ensure that moderators remain respectful and to hope that the membership follows. The best way to show that some behaviour is not tolerated or suitable is to show suitable behaviour yourself. If you allow yourself to get drawn into fights (even if in good cause) then all you do is reinforce the disruptive behaviour (heck already this thread is mild off topic from the original).

We can't ensure that everyone has the same voice nor the same opinions (indeed to do so would be childish to even attempt to try and would kill the forum). What we aim is to try and ensure that members treat each other with respect no matter how "good" they are at photography. It's a difficult path at times - and some buzzword topics have come to our attention as causing disruption (most also cause disruption on other sites - wedding photography is a prime example of this matter and TPF is not alone in that it can cause problems and emotions to run high).

*ps typing all this is a nightmare when a cat is licking your fingers

I still answered you! I gave you everything you needed to solve your problem! I just said I normally don't help those who are acting as professional, but still asking beginner questions! Do you see the paradox there? Now I feel like my help was not appreciated, since I was honest with you!

Is that anything like the guy who doesn't shoot weddings, but advertises for them?

In the thread above, we can see see plenty of rude, condescending, outrageous treatment of a new member....the SAME, exact, teenaged new member being ripped on here. And today, we have people talking about this girl's avatar? On the 25th it was a simple, honest question about high key techniques--posted in The Beginner's Forum...and she was savaged!!!!!!! There's a difference between having a disagreement with a long-time member, or somebody who is offering suggestions or methods or examples in one of the "advanced" sub-sections...but the OP in this thread is talking about 1) a group of people who are 2)repeatedly attacking new members 3) in the beginner's forum.

I have seen her replies to some pretty outrageous posts leveled at her, and have come away impressed by her maturity and ability to stand in the ring and take repeated salvos of powerful shots without folding...

I agree... she has shown fortitude!

I am one of those who judges people by their avatars. I couldn't stand looking at Tylers old avatar (I like his new one BTW) but, I love mishele's. There is an avatar of a person on here similar to a guy who raped a close friend of mine and I had to block him. All of this may very well be foolish yes but, for me an avatar does say something about you. I'm not saying that the attacks were right how they were done but, none the less an avatar represents you.
Well, I certainly hope that I and my husband <<< don't offend you
