They never did pay me for that story 
Red, HDR = high dynamic range. It is created by taking 3 or more photos at with the same aperture, but at different shutter speeds. So, three or more different exposures.
You then use Photoshop or another program to combine them into an HDR image. I use Photomatix Pro. I like the tight control I get with it, that PS doesn't offer. There's lots more detailed discussion about HDR here if you search around.
