What languages do you speak?

French ( first language)
English (second language)

My family is all French although I've lived all over Canada as I followed my parents so I went to English school until grade 10 then we moved back to Quebec and wanted to expand my French so I did my grades 11 & 12 in French. I've also done university in both languages.

I only speak English and feel guilty about it. I have tried - took a couple of years of French evening classes but it just doesn't sink in. My wife's a language teacher so I turn into a sort of elective mute whenever we're on holiday.

omg... Don't feel guilty. Learning and becoming proficient in a foreign language is only easy for very, very few people. As I recall from courses in university, numerous physiological and other variables are involved.

I took Spanish in high school and in college and traveled to Mexico a dozen times, but still couldn't do more than order a sandwich and ask the time. It wasn't until I was forced to speak Spanish at home, at length, every day, for 15 years, that I became fairly fluent. Ya, it's hard.

Sto imparando a parlare italiano. Lentamente.

Southern US English--which is a whole 'nother language!
British English
Spanish--muy, muy poco. Mostly just the little bits & pieces that haven't been lost to years of non-practice.
ASL--even less than Spanish. Mostly the really important phrases like: "I don't know," "I forgot" and "where is the bathroom?"

On the bucket list: increase Spanish vocabulary to become fluent in it again; learn French and Portuguese.
