Will Canikon counter Pentax/Ricoh?

No disrespect intended here but your arguement ids for the most part irrelevant. This post was not "will we swap brands", it was a question as to how canon will answer.

If Canon users aren't swapping brands, then Canon has no reason to care, and they don't need to "answer" at all.

Here is a screen capture I just made. This shows the JAPAN market's 2012 d-slr sales by brand and model. On the far right hand side column are the sales percentages for each model.

It's interesting to note that in the Japan domestic market, the Pentax-Ricoh K-30 and the Pentax-Ricoh K-5 BOTH outsold the Canon 5D Mark III. Not by much...but just a tiny bit. Apparently, buyers in Japan were just ever-ro-slightly more interested in the value proposition that the older Canon 5D Mark II represented, with a 1/10 of one percentage "advantage" for the 5D Mark II over the two crop-body Pentax models. It's pretty clear that at least in 2012, the low-end d-slrs like the Canon Rebel T3i and Nikon D5100 and D3100 dominated sales. 13th,14th,and 19th place were Pentax's entries in the Japan sales figures, so Canon or Nikon really do not have too many worries from Pentax's sales positions. and keep in mind--the JAPAN home market is one of Pentax's STRONGER markets, and always has been.
