Not sure if you have been able too tell yet...lol..But i really do love taking both wild life and outdoor photography of pretty much anything.

Last Saterday morning they're was a beautiful Buck standing in the middle of the field behind my home.....He was quite some distance! what exactly i am not sure. I am shooting with a Nikon D5000. THE LENSE I USED FOR THIS SHOT WAS A AF-S NIKKOR 55-200MM.

I realise this shot is very noisey, This shot was also taking around 6.45AM Sat 13 Nov 2010. So the sun was not up yet. What would you recomend for a good lense for long distant shots. My edlest son has night vision Goggles i have been seriosuly thinking about going and sitting in the bush early evening. But then i have the lighting dilema also.....Any suggestions would be so appreciated.....

Thankyou.

It's also very underexposed. If you shot this in raw, you could probably bring up some detail, but it'd still be very noisy. You didn't post EXIF so can't really help much. Of course, it goes without saying, long lenses are as good as your coin purse is deep. There are some good ones for $100k....

Agreed!
it is underexposed and have some noise too

A second job! Seriously; wildlife photography is probably the most expensive area of photography to get into. The special purpose lenses for this field (400mm 2.8, 500mm 4, and 600mm 4) start at $9000 and run to about $12000 new. Even used, older versions tend to start at $3500 and work up.

There are a couple of options... One that I would consider is a used 80-200 f2.8 (which can be had used for as little as $600) combined with a 1.4x or 1.7x TC (~$300). This is going to give you a reach into the 400mm range, but at a reduced IQ. There are a couple of other options; the f3.5 300mm is an older, fully manual lens with great IQ which can be had for ~$600 IF you can find one (it's a rare beast).

There are of course a slew of 70-300mm lenses, but (1) they won't accept a Nikon TC, and (2) if you do buy a 3rd party TC (Kenco) you're going to have a very slow lens which needs a LOT of light.

Bottom line? Start saving; this is going to get pricey!

lol tirediron Guess i had better get sending out my xmas wish list .

Thank you so much for that advice i shall get intouch with a camera store i know locally that really are great sell both new and used and see if they can keep an eye out for me on a used f3.5 300mm :D.

I just was not sure what kind of lense too be looking for....

Thank you so much again.

Bazooka i shoot all my photo's in RAW now...

Sigma makes some resonably priced long zoom lenses, like the Sigma APO 50-500 mm F/5-6.3 DG HSM OS ($1600) Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM APO Autofocus Lens 738306 B&H

Or the Sigma APO 150-500 mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM ($999) Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM APO Autofocus Lens 737306 B&H

I have a used version of the 150-500 for sale: http://www.thephotoforum.com/forum/buy-sell/222898-fs-sigma-150-500-mm-hi-power-zoom.html

These lenses are for daytime use, but they don't cost $10,000 either.

They also make a 300-800 mm f/5.6 for $7999. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/381606-REG/Sigma_595306_300_800mm_f_5_6_EX_DG.html
