I would like to get a 300 mm (preferably 400 mm) or longer lens, either prime or zoom, either new or refurbished for under $2500 for my D800. Interested in wildlife and landscape photography. Any recommendations?

300mm f4 AF-S.

I've been looking around for some longer Canon glass lately. I'd suggest the 300 f4 too, but if you're persistent, you can get an used 300 f2.8 in your price range. It will be pretty beat up, but a beat up 300 is usually still great optically.

anyone have knowledge of the sigma 50-500 mm or 150-500 mm lens on a nikon camera?

The 50-500 isn't bad... I borrowed one for a weekend and I enjoyed it. Image quality was good, but it was too slow for me, and I wouldn't buy one - but that's just a personal preference.

You might rent one and see if it's for you.

The newer version of the 50-500 does exceptionally well from what I understand. I wasn't too thrilled with the older 50. The 150-500 I had was a great lens and the OS worked really well.

A used Nikkor 300 2.8D AF-I and a TC14EII......$2200 for 420mm @ F4.

anyone have experience with the nikon 28-300 mm?

you would get much better image quality if you got a 300mm prime (the f/4 AF-S isn't too expensive and it can be paired with a teleconverter). Even the inexpensive 70-300 VR would be better, not to say that it's a bad lens but it sure won't cost you $2500.

Any suggestions of where to get a 600 mm f5.6 other than blindly off ebay?
