I'm required to fill out paperwork for every applicant that I have by our oppressive government(OFCCP), so I don't get to just discard the resume's that are goofy. I was hiring for a second shift building engineer in DFW. It was listed online, specifically laid out the job description and skills required(electrical, plumbing, HVAC, etc). I got resumes from HR reps, sales people, former english/history teachers, people with doctorates in physics, etc, etc. I had to call every one of them and at least do a phone interview. Some flat out told me they weren't interested in the job and just had to meet their quota for the week(how many jobs they had applied to). I had some that wanted 4 times the salary. Had one guy ask for $120 an hour.

It was a fiasco. Out of 300 applicants, only two were decent. One of those had some kind of Nazi tattoo on his arm. I hired the one who didn't.

It was obvious that most of the applicants hadn't even read the job description or had any idea what they were applying for. They were applying just for the sake of applying so they could stay on unemployment. Like I said, freaking scum.

It's no wonder real candidates are having trouble finding a job. The hiring managers have to sift through hundreds of red herrings just to find a few people who actually want to work for a living.

I can understand how you could think that was a little harsh....=) But I did try for about 5 minutes to give the person landmarks and detailed directions. They still were not able to even get to the town where we are located. I did finally ask them to try to mapquest us, they didn't have a computer. At that point, I told her she could go to a local library and use their computer. She never made it here in the end.

Before the internet, I always had maps, and would visit the location before hand, so if I got lost, or had issues, I would have it sorted out before the interview. All you need is an address, and a map. Doesn't take a brainiac!

You would be surprised how many people don't understand the concept of numbered streets, and how they relate to addresses in almost every city.
You know, that the numbers get bigger moving away from the city center?

At the same time, who has visited St. Paul Minnesota. Absolutely no order to their signs... Your next four streets could read abbot st, then johnson blvd, then ferry road with 62nd ave somewhere in the middle!

As far as those low lifes that just apply to jobs so they can put it on their unemployment paperwork, why yes, they should go out and get a job...perhaps applying for jobs that they could actually do, in a location that they are willing to work, and for money they are willing to take would be a good start.

My work is currently hiring and I'm in charge of a lot of the details. I've been taking phone calls, reviewing applications and having mini interviews this week. The pay for the jobs is around $9.00 per hour.
You could not believe the crazy people I have encountered this week!!

Phones calls.....

The ad in the paper said to call after 9am.
At least 15 people called before 9am. They were pretty much hung up on.
People that didn't have a pen and paper ready for info. on location.
People expecting me to give them a road by road directions on how to get to our location.
I had people hang up on me after I told them we did not have city transportation to the location.
This takes the cake....Some guy asked me if I might pay him under the table so he doesn't lose his benefits!!!

Applications/interviews....
I had someone ask me if they had to put there last job down.....I said yes....they preceded to tell me why they got fired and how unfair it was.
Another person just left after finding out they needed to be fingerprinted!!
Had someone actually ask me if we do drug tests.
I was told by someone that they prolly wouldn't work here long because they would still be looking for a better job.
I had 13 people w/ 4 year degrees wanting a $9.00 an hour job!!! That's sad.

In all I got about 55 applications for a FT $9.00 an hour job.


Some more call backs tomorrow!! Can't wait!!

Good to see you had your daily dose of intellectual and moral superiority upon waking this morning and going into the job you are payed to do! Sorry to hear that you had to deal with the unemployed, ignorant, filthy public...ewww...gosh, it must be horrible to get payed to do chit like that at work. Well, thanks Rick, but I wasn't trying to be a smart ass. I am genuinely disgusted with the OP's horrible, condescending, and dare I say it, stupid attitude. That shows incredible rudeness. Just plain, flat-out, unaduterated RUDENESS. An utter lack of professionalism. A lack of courtesy. As well as a genuine lack of people skills. Those 15 people that got up early, and called early? Is it possible that those 15 who she hung up on are 1) already employed and are calling before work? or 2) Actually MOTIVATED to be up, dressed, alert, and looking for a JOB before 9:00 AM, as opposed to the layabouts who roll out of bed at 2:30 PM? or 3) Decent people who really WOULD be good hires, but whom Ms. Better Than All had the courtesy to hang up on? Yeah, mishele, it's a real biatch to roll into work, and have people calling a bit early to maybe get a leg up on the competition. Many Job hunters, and experts in hiring and personnel management, consider showing up EARLY to be a clear,obvious,traditional sign of a desire to WORK. And a positive trait, not a negative one.

The chances are good that the self-selecting pool of the first 15 self-starters, you know the despicably stupid people she hung up on, would have contained the actual BEST HIRES for the job. The most-motivated people. The people most desiring an actual job. people who already have a job and need to be to work in the AM, but are trying to get a BETTER job by job-hunting in the mornings before their work starts. But hey, mishele already has a job. She's in charge of hiring people to fill job vacancies at her current company. If I was here boss, she'd not be working there in her current position. And I do not mean that in a smart-ass way, Rick.

And, this is the kicker. She said, "I had people hang up on me after I told them we did not have city transportation to the location." Oh,okay....so help me understand...is it that people who need to use mass transit are deserving of contempt and ridicule??? Or is it that people who "hang up on" another person that deserve contempt? Seriously...there was no attempt on my part to be a smart-ass, Rick. I am (and was at the time of my first reply to her post) genuinely offended at the attitude the OP demonstrated in almost every single aspect of her post.

See, I like you even better, because I am the one who was being a smart ass about the situation. I agree with you. In these days and times with massive unemployment and our economy in shambles, with families teetering on the brink of disaster, how absolutely disgusting is it to read about the trials and tribulations of someone having to deal with the great unwashed. Same thing with George. Whew, boy, I really feel for them, don't you?

They have no clue, no compassion, and no sense of common decency.

While just hanging up on them my be a bit harsh and showing up early CAN be a sign of someone eager to work that is not always the case, and even if they are eager to work, it doesn't mean they are going to be a good employee. I have had to go through the hiring process and have had to deal with real nut jobs. I had a guy show up 2 hours early for an interview once and then got huffy because he had to wait around for 45 minutes before I could get to him. He may have been eager but I doubt I would have wanted him on my crew.
You must also consider that they didn't show up for an interview, they called. If you show up early you can just sit quietly and wait your turn but if you call the potential employer has to drop what they are doing and deal with you. If you have a phone appointment for 10:00 and you call at 9:55 that's one thing, but if you specifically say "do not call before 9am" and then they do, (I'm assuming it wasn't 8:58 or something) what does that tell you about them?
I have also had my share of interviewees that only wanted to stay on unemployment. It's bad enough that they are trying to scam the system but they are also wasting my time.
