So I shot this while out walking yesterday, and didn't really notice how it lined up. The sidewalk line runs through the features on her face. Once I noticed it, I couldn't unnotice, and it became distracting ...

Thoughts?

What you've done is made a classic compositional error; the road/sidewalk/median form leading lines, which are used as a way to guide the viewer's eye to a specific point in the subject. The point at which the leading lines meet or merge is referred to as the vanishing point, and this is where your subject should generally be located. If you'd moved back a bit and changed your angle, pup's head would have blocked the point in the background where the lines meet and this would have worked very well.

I was thinking the same thing, in hindsight, as it is the lines carry, at least my eyes, through the puppy and on to hte end of the sidewalk.
