My Second Round - C&C for anybody willing .

Here are some shots of my second roll of film . We went downtown Christmas Eve , to the zoo , and then next day , my sister and I went out taking pictures .

1. At the park with my sister Christmas day . I know I should have had her look into the picture , not out of the picture - my bad .

2. Downtown with my dad , Christmas Eve . Freezing cold , used tripods and remotes for bulb shutter for 30 seconds .

3. At the zoo with dad , Christmas Eve day . The patch of white in the cnter of the picture is actually part of the rope fence . I tried to focus past it , this was the best I could get .

I like #2 the best. #3 would have been great if there was no giant bright spot going through the middle of the shot on the eagles.

C&C per req:

1. Definitely, she should be looking toward you, unless we can see what she's looking at. Also, consider your background; it's busy and distracting. Consider using longer glass and a larger aperture to help reduce the sharpness of background focus.

2. I like this one, it's a shame that the building to the left is almost blown, but overall, the exposure is good. If you can, I would try and do some perspective correction with something like Photoshop's distortion filter to correct the leaning buildings.

3. A real shame about the fence; might be worth some time dodgin and burning to reduce the effect. If not for that, it would be a great shot, and all the better for not being recognizable as a 'zoo' shot. I love the expressions!

I was trying different effects to get rid of the white patch , I didn't even think of dodging and burning . I shall try it

One thing you need to learn about shooting on color negative film can be gleaned from analyzing your own words in your first shot's statement, where you wrote: "At the park with my sister Christmas day . I know I should have had her look into the picture , not out of the picture - my bad ."

So, yes, "your bad". YOUR mistake, and you are owning up to it. That's good, because color negative film, processing, and printing, then scanning, all costs money and takes time. YOU took responsibility for the failure of the shot. The goal is to NOT MAKE, or not "TAKE", or not "shoot", a bad picture. Now that you realize that her positioning in the frame is kind of off-balance, and that she should have been looking as we say, "into the frame", you've learned a super-valuable lesson.

I see that she was angry at you for making her stand there without a coat...well...it's December, and she's wearing a T-shirt...she looks uncomfortable and not at ease. Lesson 2...make sure subjects are at ease, comfortable, and not actively irritated at you! (lol, but, seriously, no lol...)

So, the idea with shooting film is, and always has been, NOT TO TAKE bad photos...like with your sister, if you had told her to go get a cute jacket, one she really likes, she would have had an entirely different attitude. As for her looking out of the frame--just do NOT press the release on those kinda' half-done shots. Do not even make them. Try and make each shot "count". It is not how many frames of film you run through the camera that counts, it is how many frames you want to keep and show off.
