It seems this horse has been ran to death.

Stop moderating to the letter and moderate to the spirit.

a great example of that...a gun thread, clearly against forum rules, is allowed to stay because "it didn't get ugly".
schwettys "goodby thread" , also against the rules, but not ugly, immediately removed.

As you can see we can't appease everyone. If we work to the letter of the rules we are classed as oppressive and if we work within the flavour of the rules we get classed as inconsistent.

this really isnt about appeasing everyone. obviously we know that isn't possible. But what are we supposed to think, how are we supposed to feel, when the mods cover the spectrum from relaxed on certain rules to hard lined to-the-letter? we have no idea where the line is, except by the rules, and when two threads break the rules, and only one removed, with NO explanation, of course people are going to wonder what happened...and of course people are going to think that maybe it was personal. I think you are one of the most personable and fairest Mods we have here Overread, and personally, (just my opinion) I think you have the perfect blend of "letting things fly", with putting a stop to something when it starts to go bad.
(I think Tirediron does this very well also) I guess that's a difficult trait to replicate, or teach, especially in the middle of having to baby sit a forum full of unruly children. but HOWEVER it is you come to your decisions, it should be a mandatory internet seminar (webinar?) to all forum mods.

As for threads that vanish and reappear - we honestly don't delete that many threads. Barring spam threads most of the only deleted content is one off posts or parts of posts which are, generally, insulting/degrading or flame bait (and those removals normally come with a notice to the person who posted them or a note in the thread itself to stop the fight and get back on track). Very few threads made by legitimate members are removed - and most of them which are are nearly always at a fight stage to the point where keeping the thread on view or where cleaning out the fight is simply not worth while.

On the subject of more open moderation I have requested that the "suspend" notation is added to the forum software instead of "ban" when a member is given a time-out - unfortunately this is something software side with the site and out of my hands to fix.

Perhaps a more obvious 'Moderator' presence.

Two possible ways to reduce what you see as unfair criticism of the MODS

As soon as possible, step into threads openly and place a warning as A MODERATOR and explain why you are stepping in.
Then your good deeds will show.

If a thread is removed to the MOD forum for discussion, leave a note in its place.
Show that discussion is done and actions aren't the arbitrary move of one mod.

Right.

Speaking from experience, actions of leadership cannot be inconsistent or people will immediately start feeling like they are singled out, or others are being favored. The only way to avoid inconsistency is to establish clear rules and follow them.

And yeah, I know it's "just a forum", but still... still good for the community.

the way to keep these rules and actions alive, because rules in word form can be ambiguous, is to have the presence and history in place in the threads.
That way, no matter an individual's length of time here, upon a complaint about unfairness or arbitrariness, other members can point to the history of just behavior.

Openness builds membership support.

And if there aren't enough Mods to have two around all the time, appoint more.
It doesn't cost anything.

Page six. Awesome. lol.

Funny how much this goes on these days. Here's bottom line according to me. lol

1. thread was deleted based on the fact that it was robin, not the rules. period. point in case has been made already.

2. admins don't care. (this is the only thing that truly bothers me a tiny bit). I prefer a site where admins have an interest in the success of the site, not in the fiscal success only. So that part kinda sucks.

3. keith appears to be a heavy handed turd as of late, thinking his role is more important than it is. Sad really 'cause I used to defend him regularly. I say this knowing what it is like...before I ran my own site, I became a mod and unfortunately did the same thing, until I saw the error of my ways and realized how much of a douche I became. It's the net, you're not that important, don't be a douche. Good words to live by.

So in short, one mod is a tool, the others do a good job running the site and trying to control the backlash from the other, and the admins don't give a chit about the actual goings on in the site as long as it is run smooth enough and the new member join numbers are not going down.

This is the world we live in....the site we chose to be a part of. So b1tching about it is not going to make the slightest bit of a difference, as it's not actually run by any one person that gives a chit. So...we either hang out and try to enjoy our time here and deal with the retardation that occurs, or we leave.

How I see it anyway. :-)
